UAA Honors College presents Student Visions of Alaska's Past, Present and Future photo exhibit and reception

The Honors College will be hosting a showing of all photos and a prize giveaway for the winners on October 13th at 7pm. Join us in the Student Union Den to see photos depicting Alaska's past, present and future. It will be a night of art you do not want to miss. Unveiling of Anchorage Times and Images of Alaska Exhibit

The Alaska Collection at the UAA/APU Consortium Library, second floor (free)
Come to the official opening of the exhibit highlighting the front pages from the Anchorage Times with headlines such as "We're In," "First Slope Oil Flows" and the "City Rallies from Quake." The exhibit of Alaskan images was made possible by a generous contribution from the Robert B. Atwood Foundation. The digital display will keep Alaska's history alive for the next generations with changing images and editorials in addition to the permanent display honoring Bob Atwood and the Anchorage Times.

The Torrent Shipwreck: Searching for Alaska's Underwater History

In 1868 a wooden sailing ship carrying 125 U.S. Army soldiers hit a reef and sank in the lower Cook Inlet. Nearly 140 years later, a dedicated team of technical scuba divers found the Torrent's final resting place. Get ready, what they discovered on the sea floor will amaze you. The premiere will be followed by a Q&A by the director, Steve Lloyd and his crew.

Giinaquq Like A Face -- Alaska Historical Society annual conference keynote address by Dr. Sven Haakanson, Jr.

Dr. Sven Haakanson, Jr. is the Executive Director of the Alutiiq Museum & Archaeological Repository in Kodiak, AK. He will discuss his exciting work on the exhibition Giinaquq: Like A Face, featuring a collection of 19th century Alutiiq Masks collected from Kodiak by the French in 1872. In 2007 Dr. Haakanson was a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship ("Genius Grant").
