What does facilitation mean to the AEIN Network?

  • Valued recognition of all participants is integral to the success of facilitating. Organization and preparation help set a positive tone. Build trust in small groupings to enable all voices to be heard. This is where some of the real work gets done. Repetition and paraphrasing help to create structures for active listening. Setting and adhering to collective norms is foundational to success.
  • The facilitator encourages collaboration + safety + validation + empowerment + voice + what is? You do the math! The group nets creativity + competence + intended outcomes.
  • Facilitation Matters! A good facilitator is an organizer, a good time keeper, a good listener, keeps everyone engaged, draws everyone into the conversation, kindly redirects, cares, has fun, completes tasks in a timely manner.
  • Successful facilitation has a defined structure including an opening and a closing. A purpose or goal is clearly defined at the beginning. All members have a voice and feel safe and included. At the end , there is a product (even if only a list of things to do) is created. And all members leave feeling successful.
  • Leaders provided clear expectations and directions. Time was managed in a way that allowed group members to process and share, and clarify understanding. this empowered members to produce a meaningful outcome. Facilitators were non-intrusive, but very active in the process.
  • You don't always have to go with the experts in the field, sometimes the best advice comes from right next-door. the information received needs to be useable and applicable in your day to day teaching.
  • Atmosphere is key! Comfortable, believe in the information.
