PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

"We know the collection and examination of data is only one part of the larger picture...what questions we ask from looking at the data...what we decide to focus on at this point...how we redefine success...how we decide to change, or not change, our methods and established practices...how we realize our overall goals...those are the questions that make up the AEIN process." Principal

The Alaska Educational Innovations Network guides its professional development work through the Standards from the National Staff Development Council. NSDC emphasizes that effective professional learning is ongoing, job-embedded, and guided by student learning needs. Yearly, AEIN network schools use the NSDC survey to gauge their progress toward the professional development standards.

NETWORK LEARNING

A key innovation in the AEIN grant is the concept of "network learning." The goal is to bring together learners and teachers throughout the network to collaborate on solving the issues that face Alaskan educators. In essence, we believe that all of us know more than any of us and that key solutions to the problems we face can be found within our shared wisdom.

"...we had good fortune of receiving input from two UAA staff members. Both, in their wisdom listened and questioned with tenderness as if they realized how fragile I was becoming in this process...I took it for granted that feeling vulnerable, emptied of control, and reflection about it to strangers was just what was done in AEIN celebrations."
