How competitive is it to get into the DMS program?
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is competitive in the sense it receives more applications than spots available. The competitiveness of the program is determined by the number of applications received during the application cycle and therefore changes.
Is the UAA DMS program accredited?
There are two types of accreditation for educational programs: regional and programmatic. This program is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, but doesn't have programmatic accreditation at this time. We are working towards obtaining programmatic accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), which accredits medical sonography programs.
How are students selected for an interview?
Student applications are scored, and approximately 20 of the top scoring applicants are offered an interview.
What type of degree or certification meets the application requirement?
There isn't a definitive list. However, the degree/certification must be in a profession that is direct patient care-related. Students should inquire with the program director if they are unsure about their qualifications.
In some professions, a license is required instead of certification. Licensures in those professions meet the certification requirement.
What type of recent work experience meets the application requirement?
Work experience, like the degree/certification requirement, must be in a profession that is direct patient care-related; and must be within the last five years.
There is no minimum amount of work experience needed to apply, but less than six months won't earn any points for this item when applications are scored.
