He began his northern research in 1962 as a crew member on the U.W.'s Aleut-Konyag Prehistory and Ecology project excavation at Three Saints Bay on Kodiak Island. He joined the faculty of Alaska Methodist (now Alaska Pacific) University in 1969. In 1977 he accepted a position at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where he currently is Professor of Anthropology. Since 1962 Workman has participated in, directed or co-directed archaeological field projects in the Cook Inlet region, on Kodiak Island, the Copper River Basin and the southern Yukon Territory of Canada, spending slightly over two and one half of the last 35 years in the field. He has authored or co-authored some twenty scientific papers and one published monograph on the culture history of the Aishihik-Kluane area, southwest Yukon Territory of Canada as well as several popular articles and numerous reviews, unpublished reports and papers delivered at professional meetings.
