	Black River Autumn	Nick Jans
	Nick Jans is a teacher in Ambler, Alaska, in the Northwest Arctic, 300 miles from the nearest highway. His essays have appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, Alaska magazine, National Fisherman and other magazines. "Black River Autumn" appears in his new book, The Last Light Breaking (Alaska Northwest Books).

	Two Lakes	Nancy Lord
	Nancy Lord has published non-fiction in a range of magazines and anthologies including Sierra, Left Bank, Manoa, and the Wildlands Anthology. She was a winner of Sierra magazine’s nature writing competition in 1991. Lord is also the author of two short story collections, The Compass Inside Ourselves (Fireweed Press), and Survival (Coffee House Press).

	Cobb Island	Carolyn Servid
	Carolyn Servid is the editor of the anthology, Reflections of the Island’s Edge (Graywolf Press) and haspublished essays and poems in North Dakota Quarterly, Loonlark: An Anthology of Poetry and Prose, and Western American Literature. She is the Director of the Island Institute in Sitka, Alaska.

	Whiteout	Gary Holthaus
	Gary Holthaus is the author of two collections of poetry, Unexpected Manna, and Circling Back, and the co-editor of The Great Land: Reflections on Alaska, A Society to Match the Scenery and AQR’s Alaska Native Writers, Orators and Storytellers. He is the former Director of the Alaska Humanities Forum and current Director of the Center of the American West at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

	Trapping Wolves	Carolyn Kremers
	Carolyn Kremers received a Special Citation from the PEN/Jerard Fund Award for her manuscript, Place of the Pretend People, from which "Trapping Wolves" has been excerpted. The names of the people included in this essay have been changed by the author to ensure their privacy. The names of landforms proximal to the trapline have also been changed.

	FICTION

	Freak Accidents	Gretchen McCullough
	Gretchen McCullough has taught at schools in Cairo, Istanbul, and Tokyo. She is in the MFA writing program at the University of Alabama.

	Live Audiences	Rob Roberge
	Rob Roberge teaches part-time at Daeman College and also works as an industrial painter. "Live Audiences" is his first published story.

	Nostalgia	Annie Reid
	Annie Reid is a Seattle-area writer and performer. She is a recent recipient of a commission in fiction writing from the Seattle Arts Commission. Her stories appear in Ergo, and in the anthology Good to Go.

	Cagneyrama	Amber Dorko
	Amber Dorko is a recipient of a creative writing fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and has recent stories in The Northwest Review and Long Shot. This is her second appearance in AQR.

	The Good Companion	John Goulet
	John Goulet teaches at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. His novel, Oh’s Profit, was published by William Morrow, and his short stories have appeared widely in literary journals. Goulet was awarded the 1993 Short Fiction Award by the Council for Wisconsin Writers.

	Callithumpian	Paul Witherington
	Paul Witherington's stories have appeared in Chicago Review, Epoch, South Carolina Review, Kansas Quarterly and many other magazines. This is his second appearance in AQR.

	Grace	Kirstin Scott
	Kirstin Scott is in the MFA writing program at the University of Utah.

	Detritus	Jacqueline Keren
	Jacqueline Keren teaches reading and writing to adults at the Brooklyn Public Library. "Detritus" is her first published story.

	Firetext	Claudia Ricci
	Claudia Ricci has published stories in Another Chicago Magazine, Pig Iron Press, and The Little Magazine. She is Assistant Dean of the School of Public Health at SUNY Albany and a freelance writer for The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

	Hor-ghay-Loo-ees-bor-g-hais	Marie Sheppard Williams
	Marie Sheppard Williams was a 1993 winner of a Pushcart Prize and a recipient of a Wolf Pen Fellowship in fiction sponsored by the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Her recent stories appear in American Voice, Hurricane Alice, and Yale Review. This is her second appearance in AQR.

	The Next Great Storm	Deborah Drnec Wilkes
	Deborah Drnec Wilkes has published stories in Bostonia Magazine, Carolina Quarterly, and The Greensboro Review. She works as an editor for Hackett Publishing Company and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

	The Stitching of a Baseball Thrown at Noon	Janice Levy
	Janice Levy's stories have appeared in a number of anthologies and a range of journals including The American Voice, North Dakota Quarterly, and Prism. One of her stories was nominated for a 1993 Pushcart Prize and "The Stitching of a Baseball Thrown at Noon" was a winner in the 1993 Writer’s Digest fiction contest.

	St. Nicholas Suite	Matt Clark
	Matt Clark's recent stories appear in Cream City Review, Paragraph and Gulf Stream. He is in the MFA writing program at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he is a fiction editor of New Delta Review and assistant editor at Exquisite Corpse.

	Lisa Fishman's poems have appeared in a number of journals including Louisiana Literature, The Antioch Review, and the Wallace Stevens Journal.

	Ann Fox Chandonnet is the author of seven collections of poetry, the most recent, Canoeing in the Rain (Mr. Cogito), and a children’s book, Chief Stephans’ Parky, just reissued by Roberts Rinehart. She works as a publicist for Alaska Northwest Books.

	Caged Arcanum	Susan F. Linehan
	Susan F. Linehan's poems have appeared in a number of journals including Galley Sail Review, Plainsong, and The Seattle Review.

	Another Conversation with the Moon	Reginald Shepherd
	Reginald Shepherd's book, Some are Drowning, won the 1993 Associated Writing Programs’ Award in Poetry. His poems have appeared in a range of journals including Agni, The Antioch Review, The Kenyon Review, The Massachusetts Review, The Nation, and The Paris Review.

	The Life of the Pond	June Namias
	June Namias's poems have appeared in The Christian Century, Sojourner, and Arizona Prickly Pear. She is the author of White Captives: Gender and Ethnicity on the American Frontier.

	Sand-dollars	Paul Ruffin
	Paul Ruffin has published three collections of poetry and a collection of short stories. He is also the author of The Man Who Would Be God, and co-editor of That’s What I Like (About the South). This is his third appearance in AQR.

	My Husband Whistling	Nance Van Winckel
	Nance Van Winckel directs the MFA Program at Eastern Washington University. Her recent poems have appeared in APR, Ploughshares, Shenandoah, New England Review, Denver Quarterly and Antioch Review. Her collection of short stories, Limited Lifetime Warranty, will be published this year by the University of Missouri Press.

	Learning to Like It	Lance Olsen
	Lance Olsen has published a poetry chapbook, Natural Selections, and short stories and essays in Iowa Review, Hudson Review, New Stories from the South, Mississippi Review and Fiction International.

	I Have a Siren's Voice	Jennifer Anne May
	Jennifer Anne May lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her poetry has appeared in Parnassus Literary Journal.

	In Search of the Perfect Move	Susan Rich
	Susan Rich is Program Coordinator for Amnesty International USA in Cambridge, MA. Her poems have appeared in The Bellingham Review, The Christian Science Monitor, The Massachusetts Review, Salamander and Sojourner.
