The Arctic FASD RTC offers a series of three intensive one-credit courses. These courses are offered in a distance delivery format (online) through the Department of Psychology at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
The course content covers FASD-related topics and is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Competency-Based Curriculum.

Course Description:
This course will cover basic biomedical foundations of FASDs, screening and brief interventions for alcohol use during pregnancy, and current models of addiction. Basic biomedical foundations and clinical issues, overview of epidemiological and psycho-social-cultural aspects of FASDs, effective screening and brief intervention strategies, and overview of current models of alcohol use and addictions will be addressed. Content is useful for various disciplines (i.e. psychology, social work, human relations, nursing, education, and allied health).

Course Description:
This course will cover the effects of alcohol on the developing embryo and fetus; processes for screening, diagnosing and assessing FASD and other prenatal alcohol-related disorders; and various treatment and family support services and resources. Special focus will be placed on the developmental and functional concerns for individuals with FASDs and their families across the lifespan. Content is useful for various disciplines (i.e. psychology, social work, human relations, nursing, education, and allied health).

Course Description:
Course will take a social action perspective in exploring ethical, legal and policy issues related to FASDs in Alaska. Content will include, but not be limited to, confidentiality issues, fetal rights and maternal-fetal relationship, limitation of coercive and punitive approaches to FASD prevention, and public health approaches (education and substance abuse treatment). Content is useful for various disciplines (i.e. public health, psychology, social work, human relations, nursing, education, and allied health).

Registration
While enrollment in or admission to a degree-seeking program is not required to register for these courses, everyone who takes classes at UAA, either online or in a traditional classroom, must be admitted as either a non-degree-seeking student or a certificate/degree-seeking student.
These courses will be offered online during the Spring 2012 semester. Registration for these courses is now available via UA Online.
