Course Description

This course will provide an in-depth review of the neuroanatomy of the central and peripheral nervous systems for medical and/or health professionals. The course will include dissection sessions in a medical gross anatomy laboratory, examination of prosections and histological preparations, and lecture sessions.

Intended Audience

This course is intended for allied health clinical professionals with previous exposure to pertinent coursework in neuroanatomy. The structure of the course provides an opportunity for review of functional neuroanatomy and application of that knowledge towards clinical treatment.

Credit

The University of Alaska Anchorage is approved by the Alaska Physical Therapy Association to provide continuing education for physical and occupational therapists. Physical and occupational therapists requiring CE Units will receive appropriate credit (2.5 CEU). A certificate of attendance will be provided to other health care professionals requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.

Course Faculty

Bernadette Gillick, Ph.D. candidate, MS, PT

Bernadette Gillick will be responsible for the clinical kinesiology and neuroanatomy lectures in this course series and will serve as a laboratory faculty member for dissections. She has held adjunct faculty positions at the University of Alaska Anchorage and Seattle University and has taught undergraduate courses in anatomy and physiology at both institutions. She has taught CME courses through the University of Alaksa Anchorage since 2003. Ms.Gillick received her BA in Psychology and BS in Physical Therapy from Marquette University in 1991 and 1993 respectively. She received an Advanced MS in Neurologic Physical Therapy in 1997 at Finch University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. She has worked clinically at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago/Loyola University Medical Center, Providence Alaska Medical Center, Anchorage School District, and  Childrens Hospital and Regional Medical Center of Seattle, WA. Ms. Gillick is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Rehabilitation Science/Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota. She is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society and the American Physical Therapy Association.

Timothy Hinterberger, Ph.D.

University of Alaska Anchorage

Timothy Hinterberger will be responsible for the neuroanatomy lectures and will supervise the laboratory dissection sessions in this course. Dr. Hinterberger received his BS in Biology from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1976, a MS in Biology from the Department of Anatomical Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1981, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the Department of Cell and Structural Biology at the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1987. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Michigan from 1987-89 and in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University from 1989-92. In 1992 he joined the Biomedical Program and the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage where he is currently an Associate Professor. Dr. Hinterberger has taught neuroanatomy to medical students, graduate students, and undergraduate students and he has been the recipient of research awards from the National Institute of Health, the American Heart Association, and Alaska EPSCoR.

Registration and Fees

The registration fee is $500 per person. This fee includes all course materials, handouts, laboratory gloves, and use of cadavers, prosected material, histological preparations, dissection tools, laboratory coats, and anatomy texts. The maximum number of participants for this course will be 25; therefore, early registration is advised. A letter of confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment and completed registration form.

Cancellation Policy

The University of Alaska Anchorage reserves the right to cancel an educational program due to insufficient enrollment. In the unlikely event that UAA must cancel this course, UAA will refund the registration fee, but it is not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses to participants, including fees assessed by airline/travel/lodging agencies.
