Canada's Look at Climate Change and Resource Development in the Arctic II
Thursay October 18th from 5:00pm-7:00pm
This is the second event focusing on Canada and how Canadians deal with climate change and resource development issues today. Panelists include Aleta Fowler (Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Policy and Planning), Andrew Robinson(Arctic Energy Alliance Community Energy Planning Coordinator)and Patricia Fitzpatrick (Assistant Professor, Department of Geography The University of Winnipeg). Aleta Fowler will focus on Canadian issues concerning infrastructure (water, sewer, power, roads, etc.) in light of climate change. Patricia Fitzpatrick will address "how process becomes complex when projects are subject to multiple legislative frameworks from different jurisdictions" as well as the Mackenzie Gas Project. DIRTT: Doing It Right This Time with Mogens Smed, The Voice of Modular Interior Construction

Everyone is invited to find out about:
Modular Interior Construction and designing 3 dimensional layouts using ICE software.
Why Conventionally built interiors shorten the lifecycle of buildings.
DIRTT and the environmental sustainability of reducing material waste, greenhouse gasses, energy and real estate footprint during the initial construction of modular interiors.
The importance of downstream environmental sustainability through the ongoing reuse of architectural and technology elements and how this is more powerful than simply recycling or using recycled materials alone.
The financial (and potential tax) benefits of modular interior construction.
DIRTT has received numerous awards including the U.S. Government's "Best Green Contractor Award."  This is an exciting time to hear what's new on the horizon in building and interior design.

First Friday Art for Charity Autumn Harvest - No Child Should Be Hungry
Friday, November 2nd from 1pm-3pm
During the month of October, UAA Professor Herminia Din's Art Appreciation students, all 140, will be preparing a great selection of wired creatures, mobiles, and fabric postcards for a First Friday Art for Charity event called Autumn Harvest - No Child Should Be Hungry.

At this event, students will share the spirit of the autumn harvest by selling their artwork. All proceeds will go to help alleviate the hunger of children in Anchorage. A slide show documenting their effort will be presented and light refreshments served.

Supreme Court Influences in Your Life: The Shifting US Supreme Court

What are the implications and meaning of current US Supreme Court decisions? Find out with guest speakers Carol Comeau (Superintendent of Anchorage School District),Attorney Mara Kimmel (UAA Political Science Dept), and Attorney Douglas Pope (Douglas Pope and Associates). Douglas Pope is a trial and appellate lawyer who has practiced in the U. S. Supreme Court as well as the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. (He is also a lifelong Alaskan.) Dr. Diane Hirshberg (ISER;COE/UAA) will act as moderator. Issues that will be highlighted include balance of power in times of war, desegregation and environmental cases decided 2006-7. "STRONG MAN": STORIES, READINGS AND DISCUSSION ON ALASKA NATIVE LITERATURE with Ishmael Hope

Alaska Center for the Book, the UAA Campus Bookstore and the Alaska Native/American Indian Heritage Month committee have invited Ishmael Hope to present a workshop aimed at discussing the transformation of ancient stories into modern communications. This event is held in celebration of Alaska Native/American Indian Heritage Month. Everyone is invited to attend. BIO: Ishmael Hope is a dynamic actor, storyteller, playwright and artist who brings us a new look at ancient stories. He is the son of the late Elizabeth Freda Hope of the Goodwin family in Kotzebue, and Andy Hope III from Sitka, a Tlingit of the Siknax.adi clan. His Inupiaq name is Analook and his Tlingit name is Kaa Kwaask. He is of the Kik.sadi clan of the Point House in Sitka. Ishmael has experience as a storyteller all over Alaska. He has acted for Juneau's Perseverance Theatre since 2001 in plays such as "Moby Dick" and the 2007 Tlingit version of "Hamlet." He has worked for Perseverance since 2003 as Director of Outreach. He started and directed the annual festival "Beyond Heritage," a celebration of contemporary and traditional Alaska Native cultures now going into it 6th year. He took his play, "Gunakadeit," to the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in November 2006. He is also the co-author of "Raven Odyssey," a play that depicts the trickster of legend as seen by different Native cultures across Alaska. In 2007, he partnered with graphic artist Dimi Macheras to create "Strong Man," a graphic novel depicting a Tlingit legend and aimed at young people.

UAA Campus Bookstore and the UAA Alaska Geriatric Education Center/CHD welcome Larry Cohen and Prevention is Primary

Larry Cohen, MSW, is founder and Executive Director of the Prevention Institute. His book, Prevention Is Primary, written by associates of the nationally renowned Prevention Institute, is a theory-to-practice book for students, faculty practitioners, and community leaders who want to take a proactive stance against the most pressing health problems in the community. An important focus of Larry Cohen's work has been to develop local policies that support health and wellness and spur legislation at the state and federal levels. He was the founding director of the Contra Costa County Prevention Program where he successfully formed the first coalition in the nation to change tobacco policy by engaging the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and the American Lung Association in the nation's first multi-city smoking ban. In addition to playing a key role in tobacco policy, Mr. Cohen established the Food and Nutrition Policy Consortium, whose work led to a county food policy and helped catalyze the nation's food labeling law.
