Fall 2006 All events take place at the UAA Campus Bookstore unless otherwise indicated Forensic Science Today with George Taft| Wednesday September 13 from 12:30 to 1:30pm | George Taft, author and noted forensic scientist, will offer a Powerpoint presentation at the UAA Campus Bookstore. His topics will include crime scene investigation, career choices, and what citizens can do to cut down on crime. Book signing to follow. George Taft has been in the field of forensic science for over forty years. He holds degrees in Chemistry from Alfred University and Anthropology from the University of Alaska Anchorage. He was most recently director of the State of Alaska Crime Laboratory. In addition to touring internationally, he has spoken to numerous secondary school groups with regard to forensic science. He is co-author of the textbook Forensic Science Today. He is a member the International Association for Identification, a Diplomat in the American Board of Criminalistics, has served on the Board of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors and is currently serving on that society’s Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD-LAB). He has been described as a truly remarkable man and overly modest about his accomplishments. One of his techniques – using super glue fumes to uncover latent prints – would be familiar to any fan of the CSI television shows. Forum on US Immigration and Anchorage| Monday September 18 from 5:30 to 7:30pm | Panelists share their views and concerns about current immigration issues and the well-being of Anchorage. About Our Panelists Carol Comeau is Superintendent of the Anchorage School District. Lina B. Mariscal is Honorary Consul of Mexico. Robin Bronen is Director of Alaska Immigration Justice Project. Scott Goldsmith is Professor of Economics and researcher at Institute of Social Economic Research, and is the recipient of the 2006 Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence. Gil Sanchez is a Broadcast Journalist and host of Intercambios, a bilingual radio show which can be heard locally on KSKA-FM. Lawrence Weiss, founder and board president of the Alaska Center for Public Policy and retired UAA Research Professor of Public Health, has agreed to act as moderator. This collection of poems, drawings, portraits and personal stories of the homeless in Anchorage was compiled and edited by Alex Johnson. A wide variety of readings, speakers, and a photo collage by Daniel Shepard will highlight this event. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Bean's Cafe.

His book, American Backlash: The Untold Story of Social Change in the United States, is a controversial analysis of the American political system which engages many to question Canadian & American stereotypes. Dr. Nick Begich| Tuesday October 17 from 5:00 to 7:00pm | Dr. Nick Begich will give a presentation on electromagnetic technology. Free parking is available. Dr. Nick Begich serves as Executive Director of The Lay Institute on Technology, Inc., a Texas non-profit corporation. He is also the publisher and co-owner of Earthpulse Press Incorporated, an Alaska based organization, see http://www.earthpulse.com. Dr. Begich is the eldest son of the late United States Congressman from Alaska, Nick Begich Sr., and political activist Pegge Begich. He is well known in Alaska for his own political activities. He was twice elected President of both the Alaska Federation of Teachers and the Anchorage Council of Education. He has been pursuing independent research in the sciences and politics for most of his adult life.
Begich received his doctorate in traditional medicine from The Open International University for Complementary Medicines in November 1994. He co-authored with Jeane Manning the book Angels Don't Play This HAARP; Advances in Tesla Technology. Begich has also authored Earth Rising I & II, both with the late James Roderick. He has published articles in science, politics and education and is a well known lecturer, having presented throughout the United States and in nineteen countries. He has been featured as a guest on thousands of radio broadcasts reporting on his research activities including new technologies, health and earth science related issues. He has also appeared on dozens of television documentaries and other programs throughout the world including BBC-TV, CBC-TV, and TeleMundo. UAA Faculty Authors Celebration Featuring Dean Konopasek| Tuesday October 24 from 11:30am to 12:15pm | Dean Konopasek is the author of Medication Fact Sheets: A Behavioral Medication Reference Guide for the Education Professional. It provides an "A-to-Z" reference for common psychiatric medications, designed for teachers, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other "non-medical" professionals who work with children and adults with psychiatric and emotional/behavioral disorders. This is an extremely useful guide for anyone interested in psychiatric medications and their possible side effects. Dean Konopasek teaches in the College of Education at UAA. He is a term assistant professor in the College of Education Department of Counseling and Special Education (CASE) where he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in special education. His research interests focus on the use of psychopharmaceuticals in children and adolescents.
