In order to engage controversial topics in the classroom through a productive conversation, it is important to provide a suitable framework and to know how to deal with those instances when someone steps out of bounds. | Friday, February 6, 1:00 - 2:30pm Alaska Pacific University, Grant Hall Rm. 231 | | Dealing with the Unexpected. Sometimes difficult dialogues occur due to a planned engagement on a “hot topic” and sometimes difficult dialogues bubble up or burst out when unexpected. This session focuses on becoming familiar with techniques that enable faculty to turn an unexpected comment or debate into a positive pedagogical experience. | | Friday, February 13, 1:00 - 2:30pm UAA Consortium Library 302 | Debating the Issues. While there are many ways to frame a debate about difficult dialogues, formal debate procedures provide a variety of useful formats for holding a difficult dialogue. This session examines formal and rhetorical elements of debate while exploring their uses in the classroom. | | Friday, February 20, 1:00 - 2:30pm Alaska Pacific University, Grant Hall Rm. 231 | | The Issues of Classes in Classes. Our classrooms are populated by students who represent a variety of economic and ethnic backgrounds. Issues of class and ethnicity silently impact discussions and Friday. This session details useful techniques for exploring diverse perspectives across a range of disciplines. | | Friday, February 27, 1:00 - 2:30pm UAA Consortium Library 302 | | Engendering Dialogue. The history of sexism and ongoing attempts to discriminate against people on the basis of sexual preference reveal that attitudes about gender are a minefield for difficult dialogues. Whether gender issues are a topic for the class or the gender dynamic of the classroom needs help, Start Talking offers useful techniques for tackling this topic. | | Friday, March 20, 1:00- 2:30pm UAA Consortium Library 302 | | Science and Religion. In public policy debates and in our classrooms, there is a cultural war between science and religion. Despite the inflammatory rhetoric in this debate, the amount of substance in the disagreement provides ample opportunity for engaging in a productive dialogue on these topics. | | Friday, March 27, 1:00- 2:30pm Alaska Pacific University, Grant Hall Rm. 231 | | The Business of Ethics. As multinational corporations extend their spheres of influence over commerce, politics, foreign affairs, and everyday life, issues of justice arise. Developing technologies raise difficult issues in for engineers, business people, and IT specialists. This session focuses on techniques for raising awareness of these issues and constructing useful dialogues on topics of justice, business, and politics. | |
