Colleagues,
If you’d like to explore the most effective methods for reaching all your students, consider CAFE’s Seminar Series on Best Practices in Teaching. Experienced faculty introduce and discuss cutting-edge teaching practices within a small cohort, covering such topics as methods to reduce plagiarism, working in small groups, community engagement, and more.
Description: This CAFE seminar series is designed to help participants learn about and implement proven best practices in teaching. Participants also form connections with faculty from different departments and colleges with whom they will develop and refine ideas throughout their careers. Seminars are developed and conducted by senior faculty with special expertise in each area. The 2009 series included the following best practices and presenters:
1. The Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SOTL)
2. Community based learning—engaged teaching and learning (Nancy Andes)
3. Student Writing: Getting What We Want (Trish Jenkins)
4. Agent Types in Your Classroom: The Initiator, Facilitator, and Opportunist (Lilian Alessa)
5. Peer Coaching (Kate O'Dell)
6. Reading Across the Disciplines (Trish Grega)
7. Incorporating e-Learning as part of your Teaching Portfolio (Bruno Kappes)
8. Heading off Disruptive Behavior (Bruce Schultz, Michael Turner)
9. Encouraging Academic Honesty & Integrity (Jackie Cason)
Requirements: Participants will attend at least six of the about nine workshops in the spring 2009 semester. These sessions are on Friday at 2:30 during January, February, March. and April. Distance participation is possible for those not in Anchorage.
In the summer and fall of 2009 participants will implement at least one idea in one of their courses. Assistance will be provided by the presenters of the workshops and through peers with organizational help by CAFE.
In the spring of 2010 participants will write a brief report on what they implemented, how it worked, and what they will do in the future. These reports will be available to other faculty to provide ideas and implementation guides.
Service Release: Participants meeting the requirements above will be provided with a contractually guaranteed, one-time only service release during the spring and fall 2010 semesters. CAFE will provide letters for their files to document their participation.
Selection Process and Deadline: Faculty should nominate themselves by filling out the online registration form using the link below. http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/cafe/newfaculty/practices/index.cfm. To receive the service release they should request that their chair or director in consultation with the dean send a recommendation to CAFE Faculty Associate Mark Fitch (afmaf@uaa.alaska.edu) indicating workload approval.
Nominations are due to CAFE by October 17th, 2008. Nominees will receive formal notification of participation by November 14th.
