The UAA Campus Suicide Prevention Pilot Project, is a formative study designed to catalog and assess the suicide prevention efforts currently in place at the University of Alaska Anchorage. This study will explore procedures and strategies implemented at UAA to determine what additional resources may enhance existing programs. To accomplish this, CBHRS will be speaking with representatives from the primary stakeholder groups at UAA, including student leaders, university administrators, university service providers, faculty members, and community leaders. The UAA Campus Suicide Prevention Pilot Project will be achieved via three steps. Step One, Information Gathering consists of key informant interviews with stakeholders to identify suicide prevention and intervention practices on campus. Step Two, Health Assessment, consists of an online survey gathering student information about the most significant health trends, priorities, and needs of the UAA student body across six content areas: 1) health, health education, and safety; 2) alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; 3) sex behavior, perceptions and contraception; 4) mental and physical health including suicide; 5) impediments to academic achievement; 6) and demographics. Step Three, Integration of Findings will involve the development of recommendations for additional intervention strategies, procedures, and documentation based on the data collected in Steps One and Two. These recommendations will be developed in collaboration with all stakeholders who will be given the opportunity for input into the development and review of the final set of recommendations. It is anticipated that the pilot project findings will help guide activities, augmenting and supplementing the current suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention strategies in a manner that is tailored to the UAA student population.
