COMM A111  Fundamentals of Oral Communication  3CR
Course Attributes: May fulfill UAA GER Oral Communication Requirement.

A survey of communication principles, theories, and skills including interpersonal communication, small group communication, and public speaking. Students develop oral communication skills through practice in a variety of individual activities, group activities and individual and group presentations.  (Offered each semester.)

COMM A236  Interviewing  3CR
Course Attributes: Elective course; satisfies upper division credits of Communication Minor.

Examines theories and individual responsibilities in informational, employment and persuasive interviews. Practice of face-to-face interpersonal communication relationships through role-playing in class.  (Offered spring 2009.)

COMM A241  Public Speaking  3CR
Course Attributes: May fulfill UAA GER Oral Communication Requirement.

The study of theories and skills applicable to informative, persuasive, and special occasion platform speaking. Emphasis is on effective selection, organization, and presentation of material to diverse audiences across diverse settings. Students will develop oral communication skills by engaging in a variety of exercises and individual presentations.  (Offered each semester.)

COMM A320  Debate and Deliberation  3CR
Prerequisites:  COMM A101, COMM A111 OR COMM A241.

Learning to understand and discuss controversial topics. Fact-finding and presentation of information that relates to and supports one side of a controversial topic. Classroom experience in debating and decision making based on factual presentations and logical conclusions.  (Offered every other fall semester; next scheduled offering fall 2009.)

COMM A340  Nonverbal Communication  3CR
Prerequisites: COMM A101, COMM A111, COMM A235, COMM A237 OR COMM A241.

Covers theoretical and research literature pertinent to nonverbal communication behavior. Focuses on the pervasive role that movement plays in the formal and informal communication process.  (Offered fall 2009.)

COMM A346  Oral Interpretation  3CR
Prerequisites: COMM A101, COMM A111, COMM A235, COMM A237 OR COMM A241.

Theory and practice of the art of oral interpretation to stimulate an understanding and responsiveness to prose, poetry and drama, and to develop the ability to convey to others, through oral reading, an appreciation of literature.  (Offered spring 2009.)

COMM A360  Forensics  3CR
Registration Restrictions: Prior experience in public speaking and faculty permission.
Special Note: May be repeated once for credit.

Advanced study for competitive speakers. Emphasis on individual competitive events: informative speaking, extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, oratory, communication analysis, readers’ theatre, debate, and oral interpretation of literature. Students develop competition-worthy speech with faculty guidance.  (Offered spring semester.)

COMM A380  Theories of Human Communication  3CR
Prerequisites: COMM A101, COMM A111, COMM A235, COMM A237 OR COMM A241.

Covers major communication theories, principles, and research paradigms in interpersonal, group, organizational, and public contexts.  (Offered fall 2010.)

COMM A390  Selected Topics  3CR
Special Note: May be repeated once for credit with change of subtitle.

Selected topics in Communication arising from special circumstances of demand or faculty expertise. Specific titles as announced. Has included Conflict, Negotiation and Mediation, Communication and Education, and Advanced Public Speaking.
