Alaska PBIS Initiatives

Early Learning

Currently
1) The State of Alaska in Fall 2009 became a partner state with the Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention, also known as TACSEI (TAX-ee). The goal of this two-year partnership was to establish a cadre of master trainers, local coaches and three demonstration sites where the Pyramid Model could be shown to be effective. The Pyramid Model is name of the approach used in early care and learning settings where the bottom tier focuses on building nurturing relationships and designing responsive environments and the top of the Pyramid is referred to as PBS. This Initiative continues to grow with 11 additional sites added in 2011. In combination with implementing the Pyramid Model, these programs are also implementing family-centered approaches by using the Strengthening Families framework, another OCS Initiative here in Alaska.

2) The Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) has partnered with the Special Education Service Agency (SESA) and Stone Soup Group (SSG) in providing training and coaching for implementation of the Pyramid Model throughout the North Slope Borough School District.

Past

1) Project CIRCLE, which stands for Create Innovative, Responsive and Consistent Learning Environments, is led by SESA and was a 3-year federal grant to build program-wide capacity on a culturally appropriate Pyramid Model in Alaska Native Head Start programs in remote communities of Alaska.

2) AK CIRCLE is where SESA provided culturally relevant classroom materials to preschools and Head Starts around the state.

School-Wide

Currently
1) The PBIS Center is a DEED-funded and SESA-run project working with 6 schools throughout the state providing three-tiered PBIS support — Universal, Secondary and Tertiary.

Past

1) MESH-AK is SESA's initiative working with schools and agencies on the Seward Peninsula. This was a two-year grant to coordinate rural school district's with the regional Alaska Native Health Corporation in order to provide wraparound behavioral health services for children.

2) SSG's institute for Positive Behavioral Support provides resources from technical assistance that was provided to several school districts throughout Alaska.

Community-Based

Currently
1) The Center for Human Development's PBS Pilot & Training Projects provide training and technical assistance to implement individualized PBS interventions for children with challenging behaviors. The projects also provides support to increase collaboration between schools and agencies supporting these children so services are aligned and consistent. An additional goal of these projects is to increase School-Based Mental Health services within schools so that more children's behavioral health needs are met. There are three pilot sites: Juneau, Ketchikan and the Mat Su Valley.
