Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic AffairsTo: UAA Faculty and Staff From: Chancellor Tom Case Date: Dec. 17, 2012 Re: Personnel news, Provost appointment I'm pleased to announce that after a nine-month national search, Elisha "Bear" Baker, Ph.D., has accepted the position of provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at UAA. The search committee narrowed the field of candidates to three finalists who visited campus for extensive interviews in November. Bear was chosen as the top candidate among the three finalists. Bear brings more than 25 years of experience in higher education to the Office of Academic Affairs, including serving the past four years as dean of the College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP). Since coming to UAA in 2003, he's directed the Alaska Center for Supply Chain Integration and held the prestigious Harold T. Craven Professorship. Bear has taught in both UAA and UAF’s Schools of Engineering, as well as at Clemson University, and served as dean of Engineering and Management Technology at Oregon Institute of Technology. Bear has been serving as UAA's interim provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs since June. I'd like to sincerely thank the members of the provost search committee for their hard work in bringing forward a field of exceptional candidates for consideration. To: UAA community Dear UAA community, This week I met with our provost search committee, co-chaired by Susan Kalina and Anne Bridges, and with our national consultant, Sharon Tanabe, to begin the process of finding UAA’s next provost. We anticipate this national search to take nine months to a year. Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Mike Driscoll will soon be leaving for his new position as president of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In order to facilitate a seamless transition, and after much consultation, I am appointing College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP) Dean Elisha “Bear” Baker IV to serve as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Driscoll and Baker will coordinate the timing of their transition. Dean Baker brings to the interim position more than 25 years in higher education, including serving the past four years as dean of CBPP. The committee will be co-chaired by two faculty members who have served in critically important leadership roles at UAA in the past, former Faculty Senate president Anne Bridges and former accreditation steering committee co-chair Susan Kalina. We are finalizing arrangements with the search firm that will facilitate the national search for our next provost. The search committee will begin meeting next week.
