CHINESE A101 First Year Chinese I (4-Credit)

Time: 10:00-11:40am, Tuesdays and Thursdays

Non-Credit Language Courses: (Parking is free after 7:30pm on campus)

Elementary Conversational Mandarin Chinese I

Develops basic language skills in listening, speaking, reading and some writing;offers basic study of Chinese pronunciation(Pinyin),vocabulary and grammar in a communicative context;introduces aspects of Chinese culture. No previous Chinese language background required!

Elementary Conversational Mandarin Chinese II

Continues to develop beginning abilities in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and some writing. Offers basic study of grammatical structures and vocabulary in a communicative context. Introduces Simplified Chinese Characters and aspects of Chinese culture. Prerequisite: Elementary Conversational Mandarin Chinese I or a placement test with the instructor.

Intermediate Conversational Mandarin Chinese I

Develop intermediate abilities in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and some writing. Offers study of grammatical structures and vocabulary in a communicative context. Study Simplified Chinese Characters and aspects of Chinese culture. Prerequisite: Elementary Conversational Mandarin Chinese III or a placement test with the instructor.

Mandarin Chinese for Parents and Kids I

This course offers parents and kids an opportunity to study Chinese language together and practice it at home. Language learning is through games, singing, dancing and other various activities in the classroom. The course will focus on listening and speaking but some reading and writing will be introduced too. If you have no prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese or if you've only learned a little bit previously, this course is designed specifically for you. Age for kids: 5 and up. Each kid must have one of his/her parents as accompany in the classroom.

Time: 2:00pm-4:00pm, every Saturday, Jan 10th-April 30th

Fee: $180.00( including textbooks and materials; fee is charged for each child and is waived for one parent.)

Mandarin Chinese for Parents and Kids II

Prerequisite: Mandarin Chinese for Parents and Kids I or a placement test with the instructor.

Chinese Characters II

This is a course for everyone who wants to concentrate on learning Chinese characters. Each Chinese character has a story. Learn about Chinese culture as you learn the origins and meaning of the individual characters.

Time: 9:00am-11:00am, every Saturday, Jan 10th-April 30th

If you are UAA students, you can go to UAONLINE to register a course directly. If you are from community, please go to http://uaonline.alaska.edu and submit a non-degree seeking application online. You need to provide SSN, DOB and personal contact information. Once this is complete, you will be given a UAA ID number. With a UAA ID number, you can either register online or do a paper add/drop from and have registrar office manually register you for course. Here are the basic registration instructions for non-credit courses, after you get a UAA ID number:

  • Go to UAOnline (http://uaonline.alaska.edu)
  • Click on Login to Secured Area (students, staff & faculty)
  • Enter your UAA ID and password
  • Click on Student Services & Account Information
  • Click on Registration
  • Click on Look Up Classes to Add
  • Choose Fall Semester 2010 and click the “Submit” button
  • From the top two drop-down menus, choose “UAA-Main Campus” and " Community Education(CED)"and click the “Class Search” button at the bottom
  • Click the check box next to the class and hit the “Register” button.
