Distance Courses - Just over 60% of College of Education courses are taught online. Although most of our students are in Anchorage Alaska, we provide teacher, principal, and superintendent preparation in rural Alaska. Students in Ketchikan, Delta Junction, Kenai, Kodiak, and the Mat Su take our classes. COE programs serve students in the lower 48, Canada, Japan, Denmark, Israel, and more. Military personnel stationed in the Middle East take our courses, in addition to students who work one to two weeks at time in the oil fields on the North Slope. Anyone with a reliable Internet connection, a computer less than 4 years old, and a headset with a microphone can take a COE course from anywhere in the world! We primarily use Blackboard and Elluminate in our distance courses. Even on-campus classes use Blackboard for course materials and some on-campus classes experiment with on-line classes, audio conferences, or online activities in lieu of driving to campus. Details of how the course is constructed will be in the syllabus, which will be on Blackboard the day before class begins. Contact the faculty by e-mail or the department administrative assistant for specific course information.

Registrar's office goes green: no more class schedules after Spring 2010!!!
UAA's Office of the Registrar is pleased to announce the passing of an era -- when registering for classes meant waiting in long lines, tearing pages out of schedule books, completing paper forms, and location specific enrollment functions. In support of UAA’s commitment to sustainability, paper versions of the fall and spring class schedules will no longer be printed after the spring 2010 semester. For those who prefer the traditional view, a PDF version will continue being produced and available on the Publications and Scheduling Web site. Since 2005, UAA’s division of Enrollment Management spent nearly one-quarter million dollars printing more than 300,000 copies of class schedule books. Staff efforts and resources will be redirected to maintaining and improving the course search processes within UAOnline. The flexibility of UAOnline for searches, providing registration overrides and approvals, and transacting business from convenient locations continues the Registrar’s commitment to being student-centered. By not printing class schedule books, UAA will reduce its consumption of printed-paper by 3,000,000 sheets a year and thereby save 38 trees.
