AGENCY FIELD PLACEMENT REQUIRED PAPERWORKEffective for the Spring 2015 semester, all College of Education (COE) students who are enrolled in educational classes requiring school/agency practicums must complete additional background clearance documentation:
The COE is aligning our background check procedures with municipality regulations for students required to complete a field placement in schools/agencies. The Alaska Background Check System (ABCS) is the system that will be used to accommodate requirements for the Municipality of Anchorage and various agencies across the state. The background check will take the place of the Interested Persons Report (IPR) that was required on a annual basis. This background check will remain valid for six years as long as you are enrolled in classes at UAA every 100 days (not including summer) and your placement is in a school agency. Please remember that all fees are subject to change without notice.Register with ABCS (applicant guide)

Student Teaching Authorization (STA)
All initial certification candidates (those individuals who do not already have a current Alaska teaching certificate) must apply to the State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (EED) to be authorized to student teach in Alaska. This process requires a fingerprint-based background clearance regardless if one has previously received a fingerprint-based background clearance from courses at PELL, worked as a substitute in a district, worked at a childcare center, etc. The only individuals exempt from a Student Teaching Authorization are those who hold a current Alaska educator license that was issued by EED. All STA paperwork must submitted to the Office of Field Experiences & Certification. The STA paperwork includes the following; one completed fingerprint card, a cashier's check or money order for $60.00 made out to "Teacher Certification", and the student teacher application from the State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (EED). Please bring your photo ID if you need to have the application form notarized in the College of Education.
