Background Checks

All field experiences require background check clearance. The type of experience determines the type of background check required. Background check requirements are subject to change without notice.

  • Students taking classes at the Providence Early Learning Lab (PELL) and students placed in an agency setting are required to submit all paperwork within the first week of class. Paperwork requirements: current Interested Persons Report(IPR) from the Alaska State Troopers office, caregiver/employment application, health disclosure form, self-disclosure of criminal convictions, field experience responsibility contract, and the Municipality of Anchorage ROI form
  • Students placed in a classroom setting are required to submit all paperwork by the end of the second week of class. Paperwork requirements: current IPR from the Alaska State Troopers office, self-disclosure of criminal convictions, and the field experience responsibility contract. Please see the FORMS page for more information.
  • Student Teaching Authorization (STA)

All initial certification candidates (those individuals who do not already have a current Alaska teaching certificate) must apply to the State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (EED) to be authorized to student teach in Alaska. This process requires a fingerprint-based background clearance regardless if one has previously received a fingerprint-based background clearance from courses at PELL, worked as a substitute in a district, worked at a childcare center, etc. The only individuals exempt from a Student Teaching Authorization are those who hold a current Alaska educator license that was issued by EED. All STA paperwork must submitted to the Office of Field Experiences & Certification. The STA paperwork includes the following; one completed fingerprint card, a cashier's check or money order for $66.00 made out to "Teacher Certification", and the student teacher application from the State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (EED). Please bring your photo ID if you need to have the application form notarized in the College of Education.
