Field Experiences

The Office of Field Experiences & Certification (OFEC) assists students and departments with background checks and field placements. College of Education field experiences include observations, practica, and internships. Our goal is to ensure that field placements will result in positive, meaningful learning experiences. All field experiences for the Department of Teaching and Learning and the Department of Counseling and Special Education are handled directly by OFEC, in cooperation with department staff and faculty. Field experiences for the Department of Educational Leadership are handled by department staff and faculty in coordination with OFEC.

Types of Field Experiences

  • Observations – some courses have an observation component that requires students to observe children in school or agency settings.
  • Practicum – some courses have a practicum component that requires students to teach lessons or conduct other activities with children in school or agency settings.
  • Internships – internship courses require students to engage in the practice of teaching, counseling, or administration in public school or agency settings.
