The College of Education prepares educators and supports the lifelong learning of professionals to embrace diversity and to be intellectually and ethically strong, resilient, and passionate in their work with Alaska’s learners, families and communities.

Programs

The College of Education offers undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, and graduate programs. Many of the programs result in state licensure. Undergraduate programs include certificate and associate programs in Early Childhood Development, occupational endorsement certificates in School Age Care, and baccalaureate programs in Early Childhood and Elementary Education Early Childhood and Elementary Education are also offered at the post-baccalaureate level. A Master of Arts in Teaching program is available for secondary education. Master of Education programs are available in Counselor Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Educational Leadership, Special Education, and Special Education Administration. Graduate certificate programs include Educational Leadership (principal and superintendent), e-Learning, Language Education, and Special Education. Speech-Language Pathology

The Department of Counseling and Special Education is affiliated with East Carolina University (ECU) in providing a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. Academic coursework is offered by distance through ECU. UAA offers prerequisite courses via distance and oversees internships, which are completed in Alaska. Distance Education

The College of Education is committed to quality distance education and is engaged in ongoing efforts to improve flexibility and accessibility of programs for students across the state. COE increased the number of courses offered via distance from 17% in AY2003 to almost 50% in AY2008. At the graduate level, 90% of the programs are available by distance delivery methods. These programs include the Master of Arts in Teaching; Master of Education programs in Early Childhood Special Education, Educational Leadership, Special Education, and Special Education Administration; and graduate certificate programs in Educational Leadership (principal and superintendent), e-Learning, Language Education, and Special Education.

Community Campus Education Program Partnership

To provide students greater access to the elementary and early childhood teacher preparation programs, COE has partnered with three community campuses: Mat-Su, Kodiak, and Kenai Peninsula. Each community campus has a full-time education faculty member to advise students, teach courses, supervise interns, and serve as a contributing faculty member in the COE Department of Teaching and Learning. This partnership allows students to complete their baccalaureate degrees while remaining closer to home. http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/campuses/index.cfm

Alternative Routes to Certification

In response to State needs and in collaboration with the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, the College of Education implemented alternative certification routes for areas of severe teacher shortage in Alaska. These areas include special education and secondary content areas in mathematics, science, world languages, and English as a Second Language (ESL). The alternative route program in special education provides a pathway for individuals with baccalaureate degrees outside the field of education to become special education teachers. http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/coe/programs/counseling/Initial-Cert-Program.cfm The alternative route program in secondary education allows individuals with content area degrees in shortage areas to work as teachers while completing the program. http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/coe/programs/teaching/secondary/index.cfm

TEACH Grant Program

UAA is a participant in the U.S. Department of Education TEACH Grant Program. This program provides grant funds to post-secondary students who plan to pursue work that is needed to begin a career in teaching and who agree to serve for at least four years as a full-time, highly qualified teacher in a high-need field, in a school serving low income students. Eligible full-time students may receive $4,000 per year in TEACH Grant funds, up to a maximum of $16,000 for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate study, and $8,000 for graduate study. Spouses to Teachers - A Mobile Career Supporting a Mobile Spouse

This program provides support in the pursuit of K-12 teaching positions for the spouses of active duty military and Selected Reserves personnel. In addition to reference and counseling services, a stipend of up to $600 is available for eligible participants to reimburse the costs of state licensure/certification examinations. www.spousetoteachers.com

Troops to Teachers

Troops to Teachers is a U.S. Department of Education and Department of Defense program that helps eligible military personnel begin a new career as teachers in public schools where their skills, knowledge and experience are most needed. http://www.proudtoserveagain.com/

Alaska Teacher Education Loan Program

The Alaska Legislature established the Teacher Education Loan (TEL) to encourage Alaska high school graduates to pursue teaching careers and to teach in Alaska rural elementary and secondary schools. http://alaskadvantage.state.ak.us/

Alaska Housing Finance Corporation

AHFC provides a variety of programs such as loans for first-time home buyers, low- and moderate-income borrowers, veterans, teachers, nurses, and those living in rural areas of the state.  http://www.ahfc.state.ak.us/
