How do I Apply?


Students are required to apply for admission to the University of Alaska Anchorage as a non-degree seeking student. Please choose the Clinical Assistant Occupational Endorsement Certificate as your major.

Students must contact the Medical Laboratory Sciences Department to arrange for a mentor and clinical training facility prior to enrolling in any of these courses.

Course Information

MEDT A101 - Phlebotomy Procedures - 3 credits
This course covers infection control, laboratory safety, blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques, specimen processing, quality assurance, communications, professionalism, ethics, and laboratory computer usage. This course prepares students for the phlebotomy practicum. There are no prerequisites, but familiarity with anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology are helpful.

MEDT A110 - Specimen Processing - 3 credits
This course introduces the common procedures used to safely and accurately collect, separate, and transport specimens prior to testing. Clerical and technical responsibilities of the phlebotomist/clinical assistant are introduced including accessioning, determining specimen acceptability, and problem solving. Lab information system processes, quality assurance, and compliance within the laboratory are included.

MEDT A195 - Phlebotomy Practicum - 3 credits
Externship in which the students gain practical experience performing phlebotomy in a qualifying clinical site. This course requires students to perform a predetermined number of successful venipunctures and skin punctures during the 120 hours (approximately three weeks) spent in a clinical setting.

MEDT A102 - Urinalysis for the Clinical Assistant - 2 credits
This course covers physical, chemical, and microscopic analysis of urine at the clinical assistant level.

MEDT A103 - Hematology for Clinical Assistants - 3 credits
This course covers specimen collection, reagent preparation, quality control, and testing of clinical chemistry specimens at the clinical assistant level.

MEDT A104 - Clinical Chemistry for Clinical Assistants - 3 credits
This course covers specimen collection, reagent preparation, quality control, and testing of clinical chemistry specimens at the clinical assistant level.

MEDT A105 - Microbiology for Clinical Assistants - 3 credits
This course covers specimen collection, reagent preparation, quality control, and testing of clinical chemistry specimens at the clinical assistant level.

MEDT A195B - Clinical Assistant Practicum - 7 credits
Externship in which students gain practical experience performing clinical assistant duties in a qualifying clinical site. Applies didactic theories and principles of urinalysis, hematology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology at the clinical assistant level.
