Meet This Semester’s Instructors

Jamie Elswick LMT, NCBTMB – UAA Continuing Education Coordinator for Massage Therapy
Jamie
has been a massage therapist since 1992 and a massage educator since 1994. She holds a 300-hour certification in oncology massage through the Peregrine Institute with specific trainings from pioneers in the field – Gayle MacDonald MS LMT and Dr. Sandy Canzone DOM. Jamie is a nationally certified instructor of Massage for People Living with Cancer through Gayle MacDonald. She currently manages an oncology massage at Providence Alaska Medical Center (PAMC), a program she started in 2003. Jamie is the contributing author to the 2nd edition of Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer, on the topic of scar mobilization for the post-mastectomy/radiation client. Jamie teaches both nationally and internationally, including a presentation on working with scar tissue at the Oncology Massage Summit at Mercy College in Toledo in May 2007.
Jamie’s other certifications include completion of seven years of training in the Lauren Berry Method of Corrective Massage in 2000; she holds both practitioner and instructor level certificates in this modality.  Jamie has extensive background in teaching anatomy and physiology for massage therapists as well as gross anatomy instruction through the University for students enrolled in the first year medical program. Jamie is actively involved with the oncology community in Alaska, organizing and participating in several volunteer events each year, providing massage therapy. Her private practice operates from the Integrative Medicine Clinic in PAMC.

Maureen Fox RGN, LMT
Maureen currently lives in Alaska, but is originally from Scotland. She brings 28 years of experience to the University, working in the allopathic/complementary field. Maureen has national and international qualifications in nursing, aromatherapy massage, reflexology, and craniosacral therapy. Maureen has had the opportunity to implement complementary therapies with traditional western medical practices with great success. She has a private practice in Anchorage and has presented in the US and internationally. Maureen represents a model of integration that we would like to see in our Alaskan community. 

Suzie Klein BA, LMT
Suzie has been licensed in massage since 1996. She attended a COMTA-accredited program at the East-West College of the Healing Arts. Suzie practices injury rehabilitation, sports massage, and deep tissue and has worked with chiropractors since 1997. She has specific training in Soft Tissue Release work from Stuart Taws; she uses these techniques in much of her practice. She has practiced massage at Nike Master's games, Hood to Coast, and Paraolympic Games 2004 in Athens, Greece. Suzie has taught continuing education in Massage for Children, Trauma Touch healing work, and Soft Tissue release work since 1998. She has also taught six-year core curriculum classes at East-West College through 2005. Suzie currently co-owns and practices at Bear Mountain Chiropractic and Healing Arts, Inc. in Chugiak, AK.

Pragyana Buzollo, LMT
Pragyana has 26 years of experience in the healing arts and has been teaching at UAA’s massage program and several other establishments in the Anchorage area. She is certified in Craniosacral Therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis, Shiatsu, and Eastern Meditation with advanced international training.

Barbara Helynn Heard, LMP
Barbara is a lomilomi practitioner and certified instructor of Mana Lomi ™ level 1.  She is a member of the Hawaiian Healing Academy and continues her studies in the Hawaiian Healing arts with Maka’ala Yates, D.C., academy founder and Kanaka Maoli Hawaiian healing master.  Barbara Helynn maintains a busy private practice in Seattle, Washington where she uses clinical lomilomi to serve a wide variety of clients. She has provided the loving touch of Lomilomi since 1996. Barbara Helynn teaches lomilomi classes and workshops in several massage schools venues primarily located in Washington State. barbaraheard@msn.com

Mana Lomi ™ is based on Hawaiian lomilomi concepts of working with the body, mind and spirit.  It is hands on healing that is deep and powerful, yet gentle, giving immediate and long-term results. Lomilomi symbolically means "to communicate energetically deep within the bones of the individual and thus with the soul of the person." www.manalomi.com

Learning Objectives:

  • An effective 60-90 minute full body sequence to bring relief to many symptoms
  • How to release muscle tension with gentle, yet powerful and deep movements “to the bone” with the “loving touch” of Aloha
  • Balanced body mechanics allowing you to deliver effectively deep yet gentle therapy for relaxation or injury prevention and relief with minimal stress on your own body
  • History of LomiLomi; Cutting aka cords; Hawaiian healing chants
  • Hawaiian body-mind-spirit healing philosophy including Ho’oponopono - how being in or out of alignment in life affects the body - and the use of Ha (breath), Mana (spiritual energy) and pule (spiritual centering) to help restore balance


Spring 2008 Massage CEU Course Offerings

Introduction to Reflexology with Practical Applications

Fridays, 8:00am-12:00pm, January 18 – February 22, 2008
Instructor: Maureen Fox RGN, LMT

This six-week course is taught by Maureen Fox. It offers an introduction to Reflexology presenting the history, theory, and philosophy of Reflexology, along with techniques and practical applications. Students will learn how to use massage techniques on the feet and hands to identify imbalances in distant parts of the body. The feet and hands will be used as a "body map." This modality is gentle, but can influence powerful changes in the body. The results are relaxation, healing, and balancing of the mind, body, and spirit.

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce history, philosophy, and theory behind Reflexology
  • Define benefits of Reflexology
  • Discuss case studies, history taking, and relevant documentation
  • Review anatomy of hands and feet. Study common disorders and ailments of hands and feet
  • Define "Foot Map," including zones and anatomical relationship to body
  • Review anatomy and physiology of body systems
  • Develop practical skills of observation and treatment techniques
  • Study order of sequences to treatments
  • Study treatment protocol for specific conditions/common conditions
  • Examine side effects and "healing crisis"
  • Discuss link between stress and Reflexology and the emotional link to physical illness
  • Discuss Reflexology and other complimentary therapies along with culture comparisons


Soft Tissue Techniques

Fridays, 8:00am-12:00pm, March 7 – April 18, 2008 (No class March 14th, Spring Break)
Instructor: Suzie Klein

This six-week course will use soft tissue release, soft tissue mobilization, MET, Swedish, and sports massage techniques to give students working knowledge and techniques to relieve pain and distress in their clients. This course will cover some of the most common RSIs, chronic pain syndromes, and areas of the body that may have suffered injury. Students will be able to use these skills immediately and reduce chronic pain by at least 50% after 1-3 sessions. Students will have homework and practical sessions to complete outside of class.

  • Review anatomy and kinesiology
  • Strengthen palpation skills
  • Strengthen current techniques
  • Safely practice new techniques
  • Perform techniques with safe body mechanics
  • Integrate new techniques immediately into your work
  • Relieve pain in your clients in a short time
  • Practice techniques for all areas of the body
  • Develop sensitivity to identify areas out of balance
  • Learn to "follow" where the body leads you
