Group and Quiet study areas

We offer both quiet study and group study areas.

General Use Computer Lab

The LRC Open Computer Lab is for current UAA students, faculty, and staff. The lab is staffed by IT Services computer consultants available to answer student computing questions. The Lab contains PC and MAC computers, laser printers, and scanners.

Writing Center with tutors

Staffed by certified tutors, the Writing Center provides instruction and supplemental materials to help students improve their writing. For Fall 2009, the Writing Center will be assisting students enrolled in preparatory English (PRPE) and English as a second language (ESL) courses. No appointments are necessary to meet with a Writing Center tutor. Tutoring services are available on a first come, first serve basis; serving PRPE and ESL students only.

To fully benefit from our tutoring services we recommend that students:

  • Bring the latest draft of the paper you want to discuss. Bring earlier drafts if you have any and if you'd like to us to look at he changes you've made.
  • Bring the assignment handout from your instructor to help us better understand the requirements of your assignment.
  • Bring questions you have for us, or be ready to let us know what kind of feedback you are requesting.

Language Lab

Provided by the Department of Languages the Language Lab provides academic support for students enrolled in language classes at UAA. The primary function of the Language Lab is to increase the language proficiency of its students by placing at their disposal a variety of learning tools, including tutoring and computers with language programs.

Math Lab with tutors

Staffed by certified tutors, the Math Lab provides tutoring and testing services to math students with an emphasis on lower level math curriculum. The Math Lab has computers available for testing and has a variety of math software programs available for students to increase their math skills. No appointments are necessary to meet with a math tutor. Tutoring services are available on a first come, first served basis, with priority given to College Preparatory & Developmental Studies math students, please feel free to stop by.

Computer-Assisted Writing Lab (CAWL) & On-line tutoring

Staffed part-time by lab consultants, the CAWL provides assistance to students using computers including logging in, navigating UAA resources (Blackboard, webmail, UAonline, Degree Works) printing, and answering questions relating to Word or other commonly used software programs.

As part of the Learning Resources Center's integrated approach to tutoring services, and as a supplement to face-to-face tutoring in the writing center, online tutoring is available in the CAWL.  Lab consultants instruct UAA students in accessing online tutoring through the SLED/Live Homework Help service http://sled.alaska.edu/homework.html where students sign in for a live online tutoring session when they need help with their writing assignments.  This online tutoring service is offered seven days a week and is available from 1pm-10pm.  Introductory college level online tutoring is available in the subjects of English, as well as Math, Science, and Social Studies.

English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) tutoring

The LRC provides English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) tutoring services. Hours are posted within the LRC as to ESL tutoring availability.

Appointments may be scheduled with Melinda Nicholson at 786-6832.

Video viewing and audio listening stations

The LRC has A/V stations for VHS & DVD viewing, and cassette and CD listening.

Copy machines & typewriters

The LRC has copy machines and typewriters accessible to students.

Graphics Work Area

The LRC has a great workspace for graphics. You can laminate, hole punch, and bind your projects here!

Testing site for correspondence courses

The LRC is a testing site for correspondence courses.

Instructor Reserve Materials for students

Instructional Reserve Materials are placed on reserve by instructors for check-out to students. Materials consist of a wide variety of audio, video, and written materials, self-paced and enrichment materials, computer programs, and other study aids. Students will need to apply for a LRC Card in order to check-out materials, this can be done at the LRC reserve desk.
