Starting DE @ UAA Guide

Until this point, you may have not used or experienced any of the UAA-specific supports for your education experience at UAA. The following six steps will help you gain full awareness and access to DE @ UAA and help you be successful in your distance courses.

1) Find your universal UAA Username (All courses)
As a student this will be in the form asXXX where the XXX represent your initials. This may or may not be followed a number.
  • Visit the ITS site at http://technology.uaa.alaska.edu
  • In the left column, enter your first name, last name and UA ID number
    • The UA ID Number is an 8-digit number and is also referred to as your student ID number and is printed on the back of your Wolfcard.
  • Once you have your UAA Username, you can use it in combination with the default password
    • Your default password is "uaa" (lower-case), followed by your first and last initials in upper case, then the last four digits of your UA ID number. If your name were Jane Smith and your ID number were 30345678, your default password would be uaaJS5678.
If you have questions or experience problems call UAA's Call Center at (907) 786-4646, option 1, option 1 or toll free at (877) 633-3888, option 1, option 1.

2) Set up your myUA Portal (All courses)
Accessing Blackboard, UAA's email, UAA's Consortium Library and UAOnline has never been easier with the myUA Portal. One site and one logon can give you access to all your DE @ UAA needs and better assure your success in distance courses and at UAA.

3) Order books from UAA Bookstore (All courses)
To better serve distance students at UAA, the UAA Bookstore now has online ordering of books and other essential items for distance courses.
  • Visit the UAA Bookstore at http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/bookstore/
  • Select Textbooks from the Online Resources list to the right
  • Select Textbooks from the top of the list on the left
Pre-ordering of books is available, but be sure to note when books will be shipped. Also, if you live in Anchorage, you can avoid a shipping fee by coming to the UAA Bookstore to pick up your order. For more assistance, call the UAA Bookstore at (907) 786-1151.

4) Submit your Distance Education Proctor Form (Certain courses)
Some DE courses at UAA require proctored exams for successful completion of the course. Your instructor will list on the course syllabus what type of proctoring will be required, which could be midterm and/or final as well as general exams during the semester.

If proctoring is required for your DE course, the online Distance Education Proctor form must be completed. Even living outside of Anchorage, the Distance Education Services office can help you. However, keep in mind that all proctor information must be submitted by the deadlines for the current semester for you to be eligible to take the exams.
  • Visit www.uaa.alaska.edu/distanceeducation
  • From the left menu, select Student Resources and then Proctor Form Online and choose the closest exam site
    • Once you have selected an exam site, call that site for their testing schedule
    • Exams are available to the exam sites outside Anchorage the week prior to the UAA testing date
    • DE students are responsible for making appointments at the appropriate time as many DE faculty do not accept late exams for any reason
  • If you are not near any of the exam sites, you must find a suitable proctor and submit an Alternate Proctor Form to the Distance Education Services office. Alternate proctors:
    • Cannot be a family member, friend or co-worker
    • Must be employed by an educational institution or public library
    • Must be available to talk to a Distance Education Representative for verification via phone prior to any tests being sent
    • Must be able to receive email, attachments, be able to print documents and FAX the completed exam back to the Distance Education Services office by the due date.
  • ALL due dates are posted at www.uaa.alaska.edu/distanceeducation
For assistance call Distance Education at (907) 786-6177 or toll-free at (888) 553-2760.

5) Find the Broadcast Schedule (Telecourses only)
Telecourses are aired on GCI's channel 9 (basic cable) during the semester. They are also available to MTA "On Demand" customers in the Mat-Su Valley.
If you do not have GCI Cable or are outside the Anchorage area call Distance Education at (907) 786-6177 or toll-free at (888) 553-2760 to arrange to lease a DVD set of the course. The copyright lease fee is $35 per course, per semester.

6) Login the 1st day of classes (All courses)
Using the myUA Portal, enter UAA's Blackboard to find your course syllabus (syllabi if you have more than one DE course), your assignments and contact information for the instructor.
  • Visit myUA Portal at http://myua.alaska.edu/cp/home/loginf
  • Access the Student tab to access your course(s)
  • Print out the syllabus, assignments and any other relevant course information
Remember to thoroughly review the syllabus as it is your "contract" with the instructor. Make sure that you understand all the requirements and timetables at the beginning of the course. Distance education course calendars are available at www.uaa.alaska.edu/distanceeducation.
