Types of DE @ UAA

Distance Education courses are all web-based to some extent, but there are a variety of delivery forms at UAA. In all there are 5 course formats recognized:
  • Web-based Course
  • Telecourse
  • Media-at-Home
  • Audio Conference/Web Conference
  • Video Conference/Web Conference
Each has format has its own requirements, which are listed below.

Web-based Courses
Please consult the syllabus of a specific course to learn more about that course's teaching format, policies and hardware and software requirements. Some general guidelines are below:
  • 500 MHz Pentium III or G3
  • Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Mac OS 10.2.8/10.3.9/10.4/10.5
  • 512 megabytes of RAM
  • CD-ROM
  • Word processing software (Microsoft Word or compatible)
  • Java (Java download site)
  • Speakers or headset (with microphone)
  • 56K modem
  • subscription to an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
Telecourse
These courses have a broadcast supplement that goes along with textbooks and the information posted in Blackboard. Broadcasts are aired on GCI Channel 9 during the semester and are available to MTA “On-Demand” customers in the Mat-Su Valley.

If you take a telecourse and are unable to view these broadcasts you may lease a DVD set. The copyrighted material does have a lease fee of $35 per course, per semester.

Media-at-Home
These courses have a series of DVDs that supplements textbooks and information on Blackboard. DVDs will be mailed out to students registered in the course prior to the course start date.

Audio Conference / Web Conference
This course relies upon telephone conference technology to enable instructors and students to converse in "real-time" through a conference call. Students use a toll-free number and code to enter a call at a scheduled date and time.

In place of this type of course, some instructors and programs are migrating delivery via web conferences. UAA uses Elluminate Live! (or eLive) for this, which is accessed through your course in Blackboard. If you will be using eLive, visit UAA's eLive support site.

Video Conference / Web Conference
This course requires attendance at a pre-arranged site where video conferencing is available. Please check with your instructor and/or department if the course in which you are interested is offered via video conference.

In place of this type of course, some instructors are migrating delivery via web conferences. UAA uses Elluminate Live! (or eLive) for this, which is accessed through your course in Blackboard. If you will be using eLive, visit UAA's eLive support site.
