Established in 1897, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the recognition and promotion of academic excellence in all fields of higher education. Phi Kappa Phi is unique among honor societies in that it recognizes scholarship in all academic disciplines, rather than restricting it's membership to a specific limited field.
The
Dean of Students Office serves as the administrative support to Phi Kappa Phi on the UAA campus.
With more than 1,000,000 members worldwide and 282 chapters located on university and college campuses throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, Phi Kappa Phi is one of the oldest and most respected academic honor societies.
Phi Kappa Phi is recognized as UAA's most prestigious university-wide academic honor society. Those elected to membership in Phi Kappa Phi include the upper five-percent of last-term juniors and the upper ten-percent of seniors, along with outstanding graduate students, faculty, and alumni.
Newly elected members are admitted to Phi Kappa Phi during a brief, but impressive induction ceremony. They are presented with the Society emblem (in the form of a pin, charm, or tie tack), which they are entitled to wear, and with a certificate of membership. New members receive the quarterly
National Forum, which publishes timely and scholarly articles on topics of interdisciplinary interest, and the bimonthly
Newsletter for one year following induction, and thereafter as long as they maintain active membership by paying national dues.
Each spring, 52 Fellowships are awarded by the national Board of Directors with a stipend of up to $8,000. In addition, 30 Awards of Excellence of $1,500 are made. The Chapter nominee receives a 5-year membership in Phi Kappa Phi. Since 1990, the UAA Chapter has had two National Fellowship winners and one Award of Excellence.
Fellowships are for the first year of graduate or professional study, normally undertaken within a year following receipt of the baccalaureate degree. Recipients must be active members of Phi Kappa Phi on the date the awards are made. Membership is granted to undergraduate students of sound character in any department or division of the university if they have been registered at UAA-Anchorage campus for at least one year, are enrolled in a the final period of their next-to-last year or last year in a course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree, have accumulated 75 credit hours from the UAA-Anchorage campus, and have a current 3.8 GPA.
