Loading PowerPoints Probably the most popular presentation program available now, PowerPoint files can be easily uploaded from Windows XP. Uploading from Macs, the process is unique and one must follow the instructions from the FAQs for Macs PDF. (Once opened, scroll to the end of the document.) To begin, the folder icon next to the whiteboard must be clicked. This is the whiteboard tool bar to the lower left. The next window merely wants to know whether or not to replace the first screen. Unless the first screen is an agenda, then selecting "Replace Screen" is a good choice. NOTE: Here is a counter-intuitive element to this tool. By default, it will look for eLive whiteboard files and note PowerPoints. "Files of Type" here must be changed from whiteboard files to PowerPoint files. Here are the additional file types for eLive. Besides PowerPoints and Whiteboards, there are Star Office/Open Office and Image files. NOTE: Before proceeding, PowerPoint must be closed. Next, eLive will need to know how large to make the PowerPoint - 1024 x 768 is the default size. This size will work, but if students have a computer monitor that does support that resolution, they will have to scroll in eLive to see the entire presentation. A setting of 800 x 600 will assure that nearly all students can view the PowerPoint. NOTE: All slide and text transitions and effects from PowerPoint will be lost in the conversion. Also, no voice or music from the presentation will be brought into eLive. In using the "Magic Wand" tool on the whiteboard, attention can still be drawn to specific parts of the presentation. Once complete, clicking on the screen title will show the list of all the imported slides. Where the slides are titled "Slide X" is an indication that PowerPoint's slide template wasn't used. The names of screens can be changed by going to TOOLS, then WHITEBOARD, then EXPLORE SCREENS... and triple-clicking on the screen name. To maneuver to the next slide, the navigation buttons to the upper left of the whiteboard/presentation will work. The inner triangles move the slides one at a time. Pros: - Allows for easy transfer of instructional material to an online format
- Brings all pictures and text from PowerPoint into eLive
- Allows instructor control over the delivery of content to students
Cons: - Mac users have different process for converting PowerPoints
- PowerPoints lose all transitions, effects and actions as well as music and voice-overs
- Older computer monitor will make viewing material difficult if resolution of 1024 x 768 is selected by instructor
