"Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody."

 My Anchorage Walks
Fri Nov 8 - Sun Nov 10

My Anchorage Walks are based on the Jane Jacobs Walks that occur across the world each May. Jacobs was a community organizer who helped save her neighborhoods from destruction by the hands of outside interests. She invited everyone to see how cities actually work through experience, to go out and see what makes a neighborhood thrive, or to see what makes a neighborhood struggle. And she opposed those who insisted on the same solutions to fix the unique challenges in cities. My Anchorage Walks have been planned and will be led by students in UAA's Honors seminar called "The Social (and Secret) of Small Urban Spaces." Each walk has been conceived to allow community members to re-think and experience Anchorage in new ways.

Walk Rescheduled:

6.  Nature Detectives: When the wind blows and the snow falls can we still find signs of nature?

Bundle up and join other families to explore and investigate our downtown to find out. Starting at Town Square Park we will tromp and climb, look high and low, peer under and over for all the signs of nature we can find.  Participants will be given a nature scavenger hunt guide and we will work together as a group to share our discoveries and answer the question: Can we find signs of nature in winter?  The walk will last approximately 2 hours and will be outside so bundle up and dress for the weather and for walking. There is the possibility of stopping for hot chocolate along the way so bring your wallet. Space is limited to 10 school age kiddos and their families (infants and toddlers welcome in carriers/strollers).  If you have binoculars feel free to bring them!
Date: Saturday, November 16
Time: 9:00 a.m.
Starting Location: Town Square
Max Capacity: Limited to the first 10 school-aged kiddos and their families.  This is a family event, adults should plan on working WITH their kiddos on the scavenger hunt.
Details: See the event  Facebook event page
