Report Prepared for Food Bank of Alaska, Anchorage
Key findings:
- 90,300 people are food insecure
- FBA and our partner agencies provide emergency food for an estimated 41,200 annually in Anchorage
- 35% of the members of households served in Anchorage are children under 18 years old
- 75% had incomes below the federal poverty level during the previous month
- Among all Anchorage client households served by FBA and our partners, 86% are food insecure
- 46% had to choose between paying for food and paying for transportation46% of hungry Alaskans have at least one family member who is employed
- 43% of clients served in Anchorage report having to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel
- 42% had to choose between paying for food and paying for medicine
- 39% of client households served by FBA and our partners are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamps) benefits; however it is likely that many more are eligible
- Only 18% of hungry Alaskans are homeless
- 11.7% of hungry Alaskans have a college or higher level degree
