Selkregg Community Engagement & Service Learning Award

The Selkregg Community Engagement & Service Learning Award supports faculty to develop community-based research, creative activity, and course-based service-learning projects.  The Award seeks to encourage, reward, and inspire faculty at UAA to creatively engage their students in learning and research that equally benefits the students and the community at large. Purposes of the award are to recognize community engagement projects with significant discipline-based scholarship, community partnership, and student leadership development. The proposed projects should ultimately aim to improve the quality of life for Alaska residents and develop ethical values, civic leadership, democracy, and social justice on campus and in the community.

The funding source draws from a memorial fund established in the name of Fred M. Selkregg, Jr., a longtime Alaskan who was a civil rights activist, community leader, and spiritual teacher, and Dr. Lidia Selkregg, a city planner and UA,A professor who worked passionately for Anchorage’s ports and watersheds, rural and urban welfare, and civil rights. They both brought a commitment to openness, truth, democracy, and social justice.  Additional gifts are provided by the Iden and Selkregg families.

Size of Award:

The $5,000 award consists of two parts.  The first $2,500 of the award will be given to a UAA faculty member who submits the winning proposal for community-based research, creative activity, or a service-learning course that best fulfills the criteria outlined below.  The second $2,500 will be awarded after successful completion of a project that develops a university-community partnership and actually gets something done in service to Alaskan communities.
