2006-2007 Selkregg Community Engagement & Service Learning Recipient
Andre’ Rosay, Assistant Professor, Justice Center, is the 2007 winner of the Selkregg Community Engagement & Service Learning Award. Dr. Andre’ Rosay will be working on the Alaska Mentoring Initiative; a formal partnership between the University of Alaska Anchorage, the McLaughlin Youth Center, and Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide an array of structured mentoring activities to support the successful reentry of youth transitioning from MYC to their home communities. The AMI program will recruit, screen, train, and supervise mentors who will be recruited from the UAA undergraduate population.
Goals of the project are to develop an innovative and sustainable mentoring program that will empower institutionalized youth by supporting their transition back to their home community while reducing their recidivism. In addition, the project will provide opportunities for UAA students to become civically engaged by fulfilling an important need in the community.

2005-2006 Community Engagement & Service Learning Recipient
Amy Swango-Wilson, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing was the 2006 winner of the Selkregg Community Engagement & Service Learning Award.
The purpose of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a sexuality education program developed for the developmentally disabled population. This program will be developed using a sex education curriculum developed by D. Walcott (1997) as a foundation with the inclusion of activities to encourage transference of information to several social situations. These additional activities or methods were identified by the developmentally disabled (DD) group in a pilot study conducted by Swango-Wilson (2004). This project was the pilot for the introduction of a larger education and evaluation program to deliver sex education in a meaningful way to the DD population.
Students in Nursing 411, a community service course, as well as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing capstone course were to be integrally involved in this project. Professor Swango-Wilson’s community partners included Hope Community Resources, Arctic Resource Center, and Assets. She planned to provide each community partner with sex education curriculum at the conclusion of the study.
