Faculty Workshops

This term, the Faculty Technology Center will be offering a number of workshops to assist faculty in the incorporation of technology into their courses, both face-to-face and online.

The following are the list of workshops by month for the Fall 09 term.  A registration form follows each monthly listing. We ask that you register for any workshop you wish to attend so we can plan accordingly. A confirmation email will be sent to you approximately one week prior to the workshop.

Concept Mapping

This workshop will explore the creation of visual understanding environments (VUE) utilizing digital resources for both classroom based and online courses. We will be using the VUE tool developed by Tufts University for this session.

Blackboard Early Warning System

The Early Warning System is a tool used to communicate warnings to students that there is a performance problem in a course. Warnings can be generated based on graded performance, late or missing course work, or attendance (accessing the online course). This session will explore adding, modifying and removing automated system rules, viewing & sending alerts, and viewing the system generated notification log.

Audio Editing

In this session we will explore some of the techniques used in recording and editing audio using Audacity, a free open source audio editing program.

Video Recording & Editing

In this session we will explore techniques that can be applied in a range of non-linear editing programs, including windows media player, Camtasia, and iMovie. We will also be exploring proper techniques behind capturing and editing video. Hands-on learning helps you explore how to apply standard principles of video editing/shooting using today's digital technology.

This workshop will look at using Camtasia Studio to record your screen and capture presentations, which you can then edit and publish for use within Blackboard, webpages, and other modes of media distribution.

Using Second Life in Education

This workshop explores the use of virtual worlds for educational purposes. During this session we will explore tool and techniques that can be seamlessly integrated into classroom based and online courses.   The course is designed to be completed over an 8 week period and can be accessed through Moodle at http://moodle.uaa.alaska.edu.  Access code for the course will be sent upon registration.

Designing Online & Hybrid Courses

This workshop stresses the use of instructional systems design in the analysis, design, application and development of distance education. It is oriented toward the practice and practical considerations of online learning and curriculum design. During this course you will look at the unique aspects of self-directed learning, learning centered teaching practices, online community building, and virtual classroom management practices.  The course is designed to be completed over an 8 week period and can be accessed through Moodle at http://moodle.uaa.alaska.edu. The Faculty Technology Center has registered for and will host faculty interested in participating in this webinar as a group. The presenter, as outline in the program announcement, “is a college educator with expertise in face-to-face and online teaching and supporting faculty in the use of emerging technologies. In 2007, she was honored with the Sloan-C Excellence in Online Teaching Award for her outstanding pedagogical achievements in online instruction and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Award for Teaching Excellence. Her innovations in online teaching were showcased in a national article about e-learning in U.S. News and World Report and her recent research has been featured in many publications, blogs, and podcasts."
