FAMILY & YOUTH SERVICES TRAINING ACADEMY (FYSTA) COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

402 P.I. Ethics Training for CPS Workers: 3 hours

Based on the CWLA and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services text, Ethical Child Welfare Practice, this training covers the issues of values and ethical practice for persons in child welfare. It will give participants a framework for assessing ethical dilemmas, for making sound ethical decisions and for delivering services with integrity to clients. The topics include ethical decision making, client self-determination and informed consent, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, competence, responsibilities to the court, termination and transfer, and unethical actions by others. The training will illustrate how the framework and thesis of Ethical Child Welfare Practice complement the NASW Code of Ethics.

407 Professional Judgment and Practice Wisdom – Online Course

Social work practice demands that professionals constantly make decisions, many times independent of direct supervision or because they operate in positions "in the field". Some have access to the guidance provided by agency policies, program procedures, job descriptions and interactive expectations with supervisors, colleagues, and clients. But what guides ethical decision making for professionals in situations when his/her Professional Judgment and Practice Wisdom may be the "best fit" for an issue or decision?

415 Secondary Trauma: 6 hours

This one day training will introduce workers to the concept of secondary traumatic stress, particularly as it potentially affects child protection workers. CPS workers will gain a greater understanding of how they may be affected by secondary traumatic stress and how this may impact work with children and families. Social workers will have a deeper awareness of the factors which can increase or decrease risk for developing trauma related symptoms as well as the opportunity to develop a personalized plan to cope with an environment that might help create secondary traumatic stress.
