Courses in the Gerontology Minor program at the University of Alaska Anchorage are open to professionals and community members. Please consult the Gerontology Department for information on acceptable course work. Course work is appropriate for older persons, family members, and professionals in the field of aging.

A multidisciplinary course that provides an introduction to gerontology. Covers many aspects of aging including those associated with biology, physiology, medical care, psychology, culture, sociology, and social policies. Meets requirements for Social Science GER.
This class uses blended web-based technology and traditional classroom lectures and discussions, meeting Mondays 2:30-3:45pm in Arts 122 or by E-Live. Internet connection and access to a computer with a speaker and microphone is required to complete the Online learning units.
Students enrolled in the distance education section may log-in from any location and are not required to attend class on campus.

An examination of the event of death and the process of dying in contemporary society. Psychological aspects of loss, grieving, and acceptance of one’s own mortality are presented along with an exploration of helping services available in the local community. Social issues involving death are discussed.

Develops knowledge and skills necessary for understanding, leading or participating in physical programs for older adults. Fosters positive attitudes and addresses creative and meaningful movement experiences as well as the physiological implications for the aged individual. Special Note: Recommended for juniors and seniors who have had at least one course in anatomy, physiology, psychology, sociology or gerontology

HUMS A416-601 SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND THE OLDER ADULT CRN: 81755 ~ Tuesdays 5:30-8:15

Addresses the issues related to aging adults who misuse alcohol, drugs, prescription medications, and other substances. Emphasis will be placed on identification, assessment, and intervention strategies. Prerequisite: HUMS A124 and HUMS A223
