GENERAL UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS
GUR’s are the academic standards that students must meet in order to graduate.
They are not petitionable or waivable.
Check with your advisor to ensure that you meet the requirements for your degree.
Total Credits: Students must earn at least 120 credits at the 100 level or above. (1)
Upper Division Credits: Students must earn at least 42 upper division credits. (2)
Resident Credit: Students must earn at least 30 credits in residence. (3)
Transfer students: Students must earn, in residence, at least 12 credits in each major field and, where applicable, at least 3 credits in each minor field. Transfer students must also earn at least 24 upper-division credits in residence.
Minimum GPA: A minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (C) at UAA.
Controlling Catalog:
A) Students may elect to graduate under the requirements of the catalog in effect at the time of formal acceptance to a baccalaureate degree program or the catalog in effect at the time of graduation.
B) If the requirements for a baccalaureate degree, as specified in the entry-level catalog, are not met within 7 years of formal acceptance into the program, admission expires and the student must reapply for admission and meet the admission and graduation requirements in effect at the time of formal acceptance.
C) Students must follow established UAA procedures for declaring a major and for changing a major or degree. Students who change their major or degree must satisfy the catalog requirements for the new major or degree in effect at the time of the change.
Military Credits: No more than 30 military credits can be applied to a baccalaureate degree.
ADDITIONAL COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES REQUIREMENT:
No more than 6 credits of physical education (EDPE, PE or PER) courses and/or Alaska Outdoor and Experiential Education (AOEE) courses may e applied to a BA or BS program offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
Notes about the General University Requirements
(1) Students in bachelor’s degrees may use course numbered 100-499. No 0 level, 500 level or Continuing education units may be used towards a degree at UAA.
(2) Upper division credits are numbered 300-499.
(3) Resident credits are credits earned through UAA or one of its campuses (Elmendorf, Fort Richardson, Eagle River and Chugiak, Kenai, Kodiak, Mat-Su and Prince William Sound).
The following are considered resident credits.
- formal classroom instruction
- correspondence study
- distance-delivered courses
- directed study
- research
- credits earned through a UAA approved domestic or international exchange program
The following are NOT considered resident credits.
- Transfer credit, including credits from UAF and UAS
- Advanced placement credit
- Military service credit
- Credit granted through nationally prepared examinations (for example, CLEP or DANTES)
- Local credit by exam
