Mark Carper, Assistant Professor of Geography/Environmental Studies, afmdc@uaa.alaska.edu
Dr. Carper's interests include international political economy; processes and effects of globalization; international environmental issues; resource management; interrelationship between society, technology and the environment; social theory and geography; gendered perspectives in geography; and issues of language, ethnicity and identity in the Slavic world. His regional focus has been on Russia and Eastern Europe, with a thematic concentration on socioeconomic transition and with a focus on his adopted territory for research, Bulgaria. These pursuits have encompassed area studies, language training, and travel.

Dorn Van Dommelen, Chair and Professor of Geography/Environmental Studies, afdv@uaa.alaska.edu

Dr. Van Dommelen is Chair of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at UAA. He is an historical geographer with interests in the early medieval North Atlantic and North America. He has a current project which focuses on the use of territorial institutions by the Anglo-Saxon kings to control noble society during the Viking invasions, but is more broadly interested in settlement history in marginal environments in the North Atlantic, Canada and Alaska. He also teaches lower-division level physical geography as well as upper-division courses on North American historical geography, history and geography in the early medieval North Atlantic and a survey of Canada course for UAA's International Studies Program. Dorn's extra-curricular interests include hiking, backcountry skiing, brewing, baking and, most especially, working and playing with his family at home.

Dr. Anthony is interested in environmental, food, animal and agricultural ethics. He also specializes in Philosophy of Technology, in particular issues dealing with social justice, participatory democarcy, future generations and responsible citizenship. He continues to explore concerns in ethical theory, especially debates surrounding the status of quasi-realism as it relates to moral explanation.
Besides travel and food, Dr. Anthony enjoys the company of good friends and good music.

Steve Colt’s research focuses on energy economics, rural utilities, tourism and recreation, and Alaska Native corporations. Dr. Colt also directs UAA’s environmental studies program, as well as teaching environmental studies, resource economics, and environmental economics and policy.

Alecia Brettschneider, MA Geography, Texas State University
Ms. Brettschneider has years of professional experience utilizing geographic principles. She developed geographical models to propose business site locations and target specific advertising markets while working in the private sector. Alecia has taught courses in Site Location Analysis, Quantitative Methods, and is currently teaching Environmental Studies.

Brian Brettschneider, Ph.D., Environmental Geography, Texas State University
Dr. Brettschneider’s primary areas of research are in climatology and physical geography. He currently teaches Physical Geography at UAA and has taught numerous GIS courses in prior semesters. Brian also has many years of experience as an environmental consultant, wetland ecologist, and as a GIS manager.
