GSA Officer BiographiesCheck out the students who represent you!Danielle Giroux- GSA Coordinator (ddgiroux@alaska.edu) Danielle is a second year Ph.D. student in the Clinical-Community psychology program. Danielle functions as Coordinator of the GSA. In addition to working with the GSA, Danielle is also interested in social research particularly on issues of social justice, social change, and advocacy. As Coordinator Danielle’s responsibilities include ensuring the progress of the GSA objectives, and helping to represent graduate student interests. Danielle views the GSA as a vehicle for organizational change within the university system and an opportunity for graduate students to have a voice.
Emily Lescak-Administrative Chair (elescak@alaska.edu) Emily functions as secretary of the Graduate Student Association. Emily is a Ph.D. student in Fisheries, researching the genomic basis of rapid phenotypic change in threespine stickleback populations from Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska. Emily envisions the GSA as an advocate for programs and policies that are important to graduate students and a way to obtain guidance and mentorship needed in navigation of university bureaucracy and preparation for post-graduation goals.
Jacob Chapman-Technology
Chair (jrchapman2@alaska.edu) Jacob is a first year student in the Clinical Psychology Master’s program. Jacob is responsible for maintaining the GSA website and communicating with the UAA Technology Board.
Chantel Justice-Treasurer (cjustice@alaska.edu) Chantel is currently a third year doctoral student in the UAA-UAF PhD program in Clinical-Community Psychology. She has a double B.A. in Psychology and Accounting with a minor in Spanish. Chantel’s research interests involve work with Alaska Native/American Indian adolescents and the focus of her clinical work is ethnic minority populations. Chantel is Aleut and Athabascan, and her family is from the Iliamna area of Southwest Alaska. As the GSA treasurer Chantel is responsible for developing and submitting the GSA budget to USUAA and tracks the GSA finances. Chantel views the GSA as essential for the advocacy of graduate students so that students can help shape their education into the experience that they desire by having a voice in policy changes at UAA. Rachel Boschma-Wynn –Graduate Council Representative (rvboschmawynn@alaska.edu) Rachel is a fourth year Ph.D. student in the Clinical-Community Psychology program. Rachel is the GSA representative at the Graduate Council. The UAA Graduate Council advises the Dean of the Graduate School in policy matters and promotes general advocacy of programs throughout the University community. The GSA participates by serving on Council subcommittees as a representative of the graduate student body. Jaime Spatrisano - Graduate
Academic Board Representative (jspatrisano@yahoo.com) Jaime is a first year student in the Clinical-Community Psychology Ph.D. program. Over the course of her studies she found that she is most passionate when working in areas related to social justice, institutionalized discrimination and with minority or marginalized populations (e.g. refugee, LGBT, Alaska Native/Native American). In her spare time, she enjoys playing rugby for the Arctic Foxes Women’s Rugby Club, hiking, cross-country skiing/skijoring and exploring new places and cultures. Jaime currently serves at the GSA Graduate Academic Board Representative who is responsible for attending bimonthly GAB meetings and representing the graduate student vote. The purpose of the Graduate Academic Board is to discuss changes in graduate curriculum and amend the course catalog to reflect curriculum changes. The Graduate Academic Board representative is responsible for providing an update on graduate student issues and the GSA.
