UAA has many international partners so you can choose to study or intern throughout the world. However, with so many choices it can be difficult to decide what program is right for you. Study abroad programs can help you meet major or minor requirements, fulfill general education requirements, or achieve proficiency in a second language. Some programs offer integrated study opportunities at foreign universities, while some programs allow you to study topics specific to the site with other American students. It is important to think about your education goals for your international experience. Ask yourself:
- Do you want to learn a second language?
- Do you want to live with a host family?
- Do you want to be immersed in a classroom with other international students or would you prefer to study with other American students?
- Do you want to do an internship?
- Are you interested in conducting international research?
Next you need to start researching different international opportunities. Visit the Study Abroad website to learn about program offered through UAA. Additionallay, below are links to study abroad programs so you can learn more about course offerings, living arrangements, excursions, duration of the program and costs. After doing some research, you will want to contact Cecile Mitchell, Director of Enrollment Services (786-1558) or Doni Williams, International Student Advisor (786-1573). They can provide you with further details on the programs and advise you through the application process.
In addition to researching your program options, you will need to determine how your courses abroad help you fulfill course requirements at UAA. It is important that you meet with your academic advisor early on and discuss your study abroad plans. The course offerings are different at each foreign university, so you will want to determine which university offers the best courses for your degree at UAA. Students must petition to fulfill requirements with study abroad courses, so it is important that you talk with your academic advisor when choosing a program.
Study Abroad programs are open to all students at UAA, but as Honors students your motivation, determination, and excellence in the classroom make you great candidates for these experiences.

Internships Abroad
International Internships provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable work and international experience. UAA partners with IE3 Global Internships which arranges supervised, practical, international work experiences throughout the world. Internships range from 10 weeks to six months of full-time work. You can earn academic credit at UAA for your internship experience, allowing you to gain valuable skills while working towards your degree. Internships are an increasingly important and integral component of a well-rounded education and an international internship is an excellent way to gain insight into a culture, an industry, and an organization.
Visit the IE3 Global Internship website to start exploring your opportunities.
National Exchanges
You may be also interested in doing an exchange within the United States. UAA is a member of the National Student Exchange. This program allows you to pay UAA tuition and attend a partner institution. This is a great way to explore another region of the United States as well as try out an area where you may be interested in graduate school or a career in the future. The exchange programs includes universities in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
If you are interested in attending a U.S. university that is not part of the National Student Exchange, this is a still a possibility. You will not be able to pay UAA tuition, but you can transfer your credits back to UAA.
International Studies
The International Studies Program prepares students to be global citizens in an increasingly interdependent world. The program integrates comparative and global courses, language study, and courses focused on a particular area of the world.
The program offers a BA in International Studies with tracks in Russia, Northeast Asia, Canada, and Europe. There are also minors in Canadian Studies and International North Pacific Studies. The International Studies degree has been formatted to make double majoring an attractive option and enhances any degree choice. Check out the International Studies website for more information.
