2003-2004 Student Achievements


Reality Canty (Psychology) has accepted the offer to do his graduate studies at the University of Chicago Circle. The offer includes a 2-year fellowship ($15,000 per year), research assistantships for 5-6 years ($14,000 - $16,000 per year), and tuition and fees paid (a $17,000 value). The total estimated value is $180,000.

Erin LaVon Johnson, a UAA junior majoring in Psychology, is the sixth UAA recipient of the Truman Scholarship, a national $30,000 merit-based grant to undergraduates to use to attend graduate or professional school. Erin plans to pursue a PhD. in public mental health services. She is a life-long Alaskan. While a freshman at the University of Alaska Anchorage, she founded the AIDS Awareness Club, with the goal of preventing HIV transmission through education. Her volunteer activities have included assisting athletes at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, being a reading tutor at an elementary school, and hosting fundraisers for the Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association. The Truman Scholarship Foundation recognizes college juniors who exhibit exceptional leadership potential and who have a commitment to a career in government, the non-profit or advocacy arena, education or other areas of public service. UAA Honors senior Nick Armstrong-Crews received a scholarship from GEM, the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. The scholarship pays full tuition for up to 7 years toward a Ph.D. in Engineering or Science. The scholarship is portable, with an extensive list of participating universities including all ivy-league schools, MIT, and Berkeley. Additionally, there is a $12,000 stipend per annum, with the requirement of a teaching assistantship after the first year.
During the summers, Nick is to work as an intern for IBM, for which he will receive additional compensation. The GEM Fellowship programs are designed to offer opportunities for underrepresented minority students to obtain MS degrees in engineering and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences through a program of paid summer internships and graduate financial assistance.
