The project aim is to increase the capacity of Alaska Native people to make informed and healthy behavioral choices involving alcohol and other substances in high-risk environments, including nightclubs, bars, and house parties. A major objective of the study is to reduce health disparities by implementing interventions that will serve to decrease incidence and prevalence of HIV/STIs.
This project is now known as "Safe in the Village". Safe in the Village aims to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and transform beliefs among Alaska Native youth in rural Alaska about healthy relationships and safe sexual behaviors. The focus of formative data collection was interviews and surveys with rural Alaska Native youth, which led to the creation of a movie titled "Safe in the Village".
