Gather Information Early!
- Check the Office of International Affairs Web site for recommended programs: http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/oia
- Meet with your academic advisor or the Chair of International Studies to discuss your interests and get advice about study abroad programming that complements your academic program.
- Apply for the study abroad program through the Office of International Affairs. Complete the Study Abroad Academic Advising Agreement with the Chair of International Studies or your advisor, and submit the completed paperwork to the Transfer Credential Evaluation Department. Contact Leslie Tuovinent, International Affairs Coordinator at 786-4135 for the form.
- Research all available opportunities for programming and scholarships on the Honor’s Web site: http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/honors/abroad/index.cfm
Integrate Study Abroad into your Major
- When you get closer to choosing a program, meet again with your academic advisor or the Chair of International Studies to discuss your choices and how they might count toward major requirements.
- Study Abroad must be petitioned to count toward International Studies major requirements. This includes all Study Abroad programming.
Applying and Making Arrangements
- Leslie Tuovinent, the International Affairs Coordinator in the Office of International Affaisr, will help with the actual application process and with pre-evaluating your study abroad classes so you know how they will count at UAA.
- Transfer Credit Evaluations in Enrollment Services will work with your academic advisor, the appropriate faculty member in the Department, and/or the Chair to determine course levels and equivalencies. For this reason it is important that you provide as much information as possible about your selected program of study. You will want to get this done before leaving on the program.
- Leslie Tuovinen will also assist you in making financial aid arrangements, maintaining admissions status and eligibility for the Permanent Fund, and will counsel you on health, safety, and legal issues.
