| HIST A390A | Urbanity: The City in History | Dunscomb | T | 7:00p-9:45p |
HIST A390A Course Description: The city. It makes a culture into a civilization. It defines the experience of being modern, sophisticated, cultured. It is where human beings have been most successful in bringing forth and disseminating ideas for social organization, economic interaction, and knowledge. It is what appears to separate human civilizations from their local, regional and global ecosystems so thoroughly that until recently the vast majority of human beings, across cultures, had come to think of themselves as existing in a separate category from "nature." In short, the urban experience has defined the cutting edge of human civilization from its earliest beginnings until today. This course examines the effects of urbanization on human experience and the global environment which our urban civilizations have made.
