International Studies Coffee & Donuts
Friday, November 13th at 10:00am in ADM 145

Please join the International Studies students and faculty at a majors get-together on Friday, November 13th at 10:00 a.m. in ADM 145. This is our chance to get to know each other better and learn about some of the interesting things our students and faculty have been up to!

Dr. Dorn Van Dommelen will say a few words about his upcoming short-term study program in China for UAA students. The course will explore agricultural development and environmental change in China.

Bring your stories as well! Donuts and coffee will be served.

GoGlobal E-mail List
The Office of International Affairs has started a new e-mail list, goglobal@uaa.alaska.edu.  Goglobal offers a new avenue for internationally-oriented individuals to receive announcements about international educational opportunities, events, and programs.  If you are interested in learning more about UAA study abroad programs, clubs with an international or cross-cultural focus, programs and events on campus or in the community that focus on other regions or cultures, or other opportunities such as grants and scholarships for study abroad and international research, please join!

Export Council of Alaska Scholarship
Each year the Export Council of Alaska offers scholarships. Qualifying students are Alaska residents and plan to pursue a degree in International Studies and plan to bring those skills back to Alaska. A total of $5,000 will be distributed among students who are awarded the scholarship.

Alaska World Affairs Council Friday Luncheon Speaker Series

The Alaska World Affairs Council hosts a speaker series at the Hilton Hotel most Fridays through the fall and spring.  UAA students are able to attend the luncheons for free through a grant from BP.  Please RSVP to 276-8038 by the preceding Wednesday and take your UAA ID to the event.

Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages

Languages:  For beginner to graduate levels in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian

UAA International Studies Students: Track Languages: Chinese, Japanese, Russian

Funding: Fellowship grants cover the full comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) at the Middlebury Summer Language Schools.

Qualifications: The Davis Fellowships are merit-based and intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies; international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution. Individuals in other fields, including working professionals, are also encouraged to apply if their field of expertise requires them to study one of the critical languages listed above.

Student Conference on U.S. Affairs

An annual conference devoted to international relations, economics, political science, and related social science fields, SCUSA is held each fall at the US Military Academy, West Point. UAA can nominate two students to attend the annual conference. The selection committee seeks students who have demonstrated interest in area studies, global issues, international studies, international relations, and/or foreign policy. Full funding is available for two participants who are selected in a competitive application process each spring. 

Deadline: All applications for the Fall 2009 SCUSA Conference must be received by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship by 5:00pm on Friday, March 27, 2009.
