Jackie Engebretson (International Studies, Europe and Women's Studies) and Melanie Parrett (International Studies, Northeast Asia) were selected as the UAA Student Delegates to the 2009 Student Conference on U.S. Affairs at West Point, NY. The theme of the 2009 conference is "SCUSA 61: Advancing as a Global Community Amidst Scarcity and Instability." SCUSA is designed to provide a premiere educational experience for student delegates offering the opportunity to interact both individually and in group settings with foreign policy experts and to learn from each other. Delegates gain a greater understanding of the complexities surrounding foreign policy development.

Qualifying students are Alaska residents who plan to pursue a degree in International Studies and plan to bring those skills back to Alaska. Each student received $1500.00. Erick Romig, an International Studies major in the Europe track and double major in Spanish, was awarded the nationally competitive 2009 Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant for study in Argentina. Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Congratulations to Erick and to faculty members Dr. Patricia Fagan and Dr. Raymond Anthony, who wrote letters in support of Erick.

Renata Ballesteros López, an International Studies major in the Europe track and double major in German, was awarded the highly competitive full-year scholarship Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals for the 2009-2010 academic year. The participants receive two months of German language training, one semester of study at a German university and a five-month internship in a German-speaking work environment. Congratulations to Renata and her faculty mentor Dr. Natasa Masanovic.

Melanie Parrett¸ an International Studies major in the Northeast Asia track, has been awarded the highly competitive U.S. Department of State 2009 Critical Languages Scholarship in Advanced Chinese. The Critical Languages Scholarship provides full funding for intensive summer language institutes overseas.

Cameron Cartland, a double major in International Studies and Russian with a minor in Economics, was selected for the Summer 2008 American Councils Business Russian Language and Internship Program in Russia. Cameron graduated from UAA in May 2008.
