English as a Second Language - ESL

UAA offers ESL (English as a Second Language) courses at intermediate and advanced levels. After mastery of advanced level ESL, students will be ready to take Preparatory English courses.  Placement into ESL classes is generally done through the Accuplacer test available at UAA.  University of Alaska Anchorage does not currently offer ESL classes at the beginning level; therefore, students should plan to achieve the equivalent of a TOEFL IBT score of 35-45 before applying for admission to UAA.

Students may take ESL courses as non-degree-seeking students, however, students who will require an F-1 visa to attend UAA must apply and be admitted to a degree program.  Contact Carter Caywood at cjcaywood@uaa.alaska.edu for more information.

ESL classes are offered in an intensive format.  In the Fall and Spring semesters ESL courses start approximately two weeks later and end approximately two weeks earlier than other three-credit courses.  ESL courses also meet more hours per week than other three-credit courses.

Summer 2012 ESL Classes

English as a Second Language classes during the Summer 2012 semester will begin May 21, 2012 and end on Aug 4, 2012. Non-resident students taking a full-time schedule of ESL classes (12 credits,4 classes) will pay approximately $US 6,977 in tuition and fees for the semester while Alaska resident students can expect to pay approximately $US 2,328 for the same schedule. You can find information about Alaska residency for tuition purposes here. For ESL class placement, first take the Accuplacer test at the Advising and Testing Center in University Center then contact Carter Caywood at cjcaywood@uaa.alaska.edu or in person in Enrollment Management area of the University Center or the College Preparatory and Developmental Studies department.
