* Dr. Rebeca Maseda completed the 2012 UAA Technology Fellows Intensive Summer Training. Congratulations!

* Dr. Michihiro Ama has been invited to Hannan University in Osaka, Japan as a Visiting Researching for June-July 2012.  Congratulations!

* Angel Remaley, a double-major in German and Anthropology, has been selected as a recipient of a 2012 U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship for participation in the intensive summer language institute in Turkey.  Congratulations Angel!

* Hannah Bertrand, a German major, is the recipient of the 2012 German Learning Opportunities Website - GLOW Award for her contributions to promoting the German language and culture both at the university and in the community. Congratulations, Hannah!

* Russian major Jessica Lauser received an honorable mention in the Thirteenth Annual ACTR National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest, in the category of non-heritage learners, level 2.  Congratulations Jessica!

* Erick Romig, a Spanish major who is graduating with Departmental Honors, has been selected as a 2012-2013 U.S. Fulbright Recipient to Spain!  Congratulations to you on such a tremendous accomplishment, Erick!  Special thanks go to his Faculty Mentor and Professor, Patricia Fagan, for her superb work, and whose tireless efforts Erick described to Chancellor Case as "priceless help as a mentor!"  Well done Erick and Patty!

* Connor Wall, a Russian major, is one of the 2012 UAA Showcase winners.  Mr. Wall participated in the showcase with a paper he wrote for Olga Livshin's RUSS A294 literature class.  Congratulations Connor!

* Alan Massey, a dual major in German and Japanese is the recipient of the 2012-2013 U.S. Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Germany.  Congratulations Alan!

* Erick Romig (Spanish) successfully completed his comprehensive exam and is graduating with Departmental Honors in May 2012.
 
* Caitlin Cheely (Russian and Forty-Ninth State Fellow) is the Recipient of the U.S. Department of State 2012 Critical Language Scholarship in Russian.

* Benjamin Woodland (German, International Studies, and Forty-Ninth State Fellow) is the Recipient of the U.S. Department of State 2012 Critical Language Scholarship in Turkish.

William Giedosh (International Studies, Russian Minor) is the Recipient of the U.S. Department of State 2012 Critical Language Scholarship in Russian. William is the President of the Russian Club.

* Patrick Nakada, a Japanese language major, who is currently an exchange student at Hokkaido University of Education, was granted a JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) scholarship, which will cover all of his living expenses during his exchange year (2012).  Mr. Nakada is our second Japanese student (Our first recipient this year was Jeurgen Klotz), who receives this prestigious scholarship. Congratulations, Patrick!

* Spanish senior Erick Romig has been selected as the 2011-12 recipient of the UAA Seawolf Community Service Award.  This award publicly honors individuals for their dedication and recognizes the importance of their community involvement.  Congratulations to Erick!

* Benjamin G. Woodland, a Forty-Ninth State Fellow and double major German & International Studies, is the recipient of the 2012-13 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to Germany.  Ben will receive $27,000 for one academic year and pursue studies in African languages at Universitaet Bayreuth in Bavaria.  Universitaet Bayreuth is a well known research institution with a strong program in African studies.  The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship requires advanced level skills in the target language as well as proven leadership abilities.  Heartfelt congratulations to Ben!

* Jeurgen (Luke) Klotz, who is majoring in Japanese, has been selected to receive the 2011 JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Scholarship for his study abroad in Japan for one year. He will be attending the Hokkaido University of Education (HUE) in Japan from October 2011 for one year as an exchange student. This exchange program has been in existence since inception of the direct exchange program between UAA and HUE in 2006. Since then, UAA’s Japanese Program has been sending up to five outstanding students to HUE every year, and Luke is the fifth individual who has been awarded this prestigious scholarship. This JASSO scholarship will cover all of Luke’s living expenses in Japan with 80.000 Yen (about $11,500) per month for 11 months. Congratulations to Mr. Jeurgen (Luke) Klotz!
