Department of Languages - Our Mission
The interdependency of today’s world makes the need for cross-cultural understanding and communication of crucial importance. The Department of Languages’ mission is to provide excellent language instruction, from elementary to various levels of spoken and written proficiency together with cultural literacy in American Sign Language, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and Spanish, and to promote a comprehensive understanding of cultural diversity in Alaska, the U.S., and the world.
We prepare students to become informed global citizens by allowing them to explore different world views and concepts through immersion experiences in the classroom, community, and abroad, and fostering an appreciation for the changing and increasingly multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-lingual living environments. We help students develop and refine their critical and analytical skills, which will allow them to consider a diversity of perspectives and make sound decisions as they embark on their careers. To this end, the Department works closely with local, national, and international organizations, including the Anchorage School District, the Alaska Court System, and governmental and nonprofit organizations.
