AHAINA is an acronym that stands for African American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, International and Native American. While our multicultural center focuses on continuously improving the quality of the collegiate experience for students of color on our campus, we encourage all UAA students to participate with us in celebrating the rich diversity represented here. AHAINA Student Programs is located in Rasmuson Hall, Suite 106.
We provide and connect students to resources, academic assistance and academic advocacy when necessary. Our objective is to assist AHAINA students in successfully achieving their academic goals, maintaining good grades, and graduating, collectively creating our G-3 Plan. This is accomplished by providing services that promote academic achievement, affirm cultural differences and enhance student retention. AHAINA: Your Campus Connectors.
Here are a few highlights of the services that we provide our students:
-
Men and Women of Excellence Ceremony: Held every academic year, the ceremony acknowledges rising juniors who have maintained a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher, and has demonstrated an ability to balance academic, social, and volunteer efforts. Applications will be emailed to eligible juniors at UAA.
-
Fall/Spring Dedication Ceremonies: AHAINA hosts a Graduation Dedication Ceremony at the conclusion of the Fall and Spring semesters each academic year. The ceremonies provide students an opportunity to have a personalized graduation recognition that includes their family and friends, and our own special Rose Dedication, where students can honor those individuals who influenced their success.
-
AHAINA Stars Peer Mentor Program: Assists freshmen and sophomore students in transitioning into the collegiate experience by providing monthly meetings that address pertinent issues and develops skills related to academic success. Peer Mentors are upperclassmen whose experiences along with specialized training provide a support network of information and resources.
-
Freshmen Foundation and Sophomore Success Initiatives: Provides monthly meetings for both classes of students to help facilitate the college transition and retention of these students in order to promote the realization of success at the post-secondary level and beyond.
-
AHAINA Workshops: Provided on a weekly basis, AHAINA staff identify topics that are beneficial to the maturation of students on an educational and social level. Topics include Study Skills 101, Personal Budgeting, Time Management, How to Write an "A" Paper, and more.
- Scholarship and Internship Information: AHAINA awards two scholarships per academic year to eligible students to provide an incentive for those students who demonstrate academic persistence in their respective programs. In addition, AHAINA may offer tuition waivers and book scholarships upon availability each Fall and Spring semester.
