The UAA Department of Music hosted its first annual "Winter Music Fest" in January 2013. The goal was to invite talented high school music students to campus to experience a high level of music making in a university environment. The festival is now in it's third year, with the 2015 festival scheduled for January 17 &18.
Each fall, high school music teachers from around the state nominate over 300 of their most talented music students for the fest. Approximately 140 students (some from as far away as Juneau and Unalakleet!) are selected and come to the UAA campus to participate in the festival orchestra, choir and band. The students are mentored and participate with UAA music majors in the ensembles and are directed by UAA faculty members Dr. Lee Wilkins (orchestra), Dr. Grant Cochran (choir), and Dr. Mark Wolbers (band). After one day of intensive rehearsal, the festival orchestra, choir and band present a fabulous free concert. This year we will have the pleasure of not one but two concerts which are free and open to the public! On Saturday, January 17th, there will be a recital in the UAA Recital Hall at 7:30pm and on Sunday, January 18th, Bartlett High School graciously opens its auditorium doors to host the 3rd Annual Winter Music Fest Gala Concert at 4pm.
